cam caps

Right boys got a gsxr11L motor with 2 bodged inlet cam caps, they've been took out to 8mm fine by the looks of it. Now I have another head sat here for mock up. I know that they are line bored. But can I realistically use the caps off the spare head. Opinions chaps or options

General advice is no . . . . . but IF they fit and IF the cam turns absolutely without effort . . . . . you could risk it! But proper job would use a Timesert as there looks to be enough meat left to cut a insert's thread and use proper M7 insert!

as said they generally dont line up, BUT you might get lucky ?

my old mate snapped one on his bandit, I managed to find one off a fecked head, but when fitted the cam was tight, i took the locating dowl out and nipped it up and turned fine, he ran that bike like that for years.  not the right way but it worked.

If you had a bore gauge that went to tenths you could try.

Or give it to a pakistani, their YT videos look promising !

It's been done loads of times, just plastiguage it.

Other option to an insert, is cut it off and make up a bracket that bolts down with the cam caps bolts.

APE sells 8mm valve cover bolts, but only in sets of 8. Might give them or the local distributor a ring and see if you can get a mixed set.

I couldn't find them the last time I was looking on their site o.O

I saved that photo from a topic on here. It's done by an OSSer but can't remember who

A mate had the same problem. Caps threaded to M8, but a bit worn. He filled the hole with JB Weld's metal epoxi, drilled it and fitted a helicoil. Worked fine.

Had the same issue @ 20 years back. Got a few of these off someone on the old site for a similar fix, no idea who. Only found them when having a sort out earlier.

Get a v coil or helicoil kit which is pretty cheap. They come with a suitable drill, 8.3mm from memory,  a tap for the 7mm vcoil/helicoil, the tool to screw the coil in and the steel threads themselves  - once done you can forget about them, way stronger than standard. Timeserts are great too. Cam cover threads strip even if you're careful.

Got a 7mn helicoil kit but somebody has drilled and tapped to 8mm metric fine by the looks of it and there's not enough meat to get the 7 helicoil in
