agemax Posted May 5, 2021 Posted May 5, 2021 I want to replace the rear caliper on my GS1000 with a smaller, lighter caliper. It has a GSXR1100W caliper and bracket on there at the moment. Was wondering if anyone knows of a direct replacement, either suzuki or otherwise that is smaller and lighter than the stock item? TIA. Quote
wraith Posted May 5, 2021 Posted May 5, 2021 You can use the caliper, hanger and disc off the gsxr1000 k1 K2 nisson caliper. You will need to have a sleeve made for the hanger as they use a bigger spindle. Have a look at my Kat project part errr. I've got the hanger that has the slid bit (no torque arm) but the gsxr 1000 has a standard hanger, the hanger is the same on the gsxr srad but they use the Tenco caliper, I will put some pics up for you. Did put the waits on my kat thread. Quote
wraith Posted May 5, 2021 Posted May 5, 2021 Pics Gsxr1000k1 caliper on srad Wight of caliper with pads Wight without pads Same mounting hole spacing With srad hanger If you use a gsxr1000/srad hanger you will need the disc (all the same for gsxr1000k1 and srad) as the disc is a 220mm instead of a 240mm but they have the same bolt mounting holes as the slingshot and bandit wheels. Hope this helps. Nice GS buy the way 3 Quote
agemax Posted May 5, 2021 Author Posted May 5, 2021 Thanks for the info Wraith. my caliper does not have the torque arm, the bracket fits in a slot in the swingarm. i want to keep it underslung as it is. I suppose i could always just machine off the lug on the caliper for the torque arm. I will have to measure the diameter of the disc, i cant remember what it is offhand. 1 Quote
wraith Posted May 5, 2021 Posted May 5, 2021 My set up on my kat is the same as yours, have a look at my kat project, as the latter calipers use the slot type hangers but the mounting hole spacing for the caliper is different 1 Quote

Dezza Posted May 6, 2021 Posted May 6, 2021 The Harris rear calipers look to me like copies of the titchy AP Racing rear calipers that are still available new. Obviously you'd then have to make a new carrier. A more cost-effective option is a small rear Brembo from a Ducati/Aprilia (yawn, seemingly on 90% of specials now). Discacciati do some nice small rear calipers. They aren't cheap but they're still half the cost of an ISR or AP Racing equivalent. Quote
colinworth79 Posted May 6, 2021 Posted May 6, 2021 Dont use the mini ap caliper if you want a decent back brake as they dont provide alot of stopping force . My bike just passes mot each year it's that bad. Likely I dont use the back brake much. Handy info on using the 1000 k1 caliper. Quote
Wagola Posted May 6, 2021 Posted May 6, 2021 The later GSXR1000 rear calipers, K3/K4 I think don't have the torque arm connecting hole as the they have the slot in the mounting bracket as you have. Quote

Slot type as fitted to my kat gsxr750wr swing arm and wheel with the k3/4 rear disc, caliper and hanger. 1 Quote

One of my bikes has a Harrison mini twin-pot rear caliper and it needs big-boots to induce any real stopping power. Handy for hill starts though. Quote

Ktm free rides have tiny calipers, mountain bikes have tiny calipers. I like a decent rear brake, to many years offroad not to use it. Quote
agemax Posted May 7, 2021 Author Posted May 7, 2021 I was kinda hoping i could get a 2 piston Brembo caliper to match the P4's i have on the front. 1 Quote

Spazpecker Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 Everyone went high mount to make them self draining / cleaner and easier to bleed. Plenty of options on Eblag. Quote
clivegto Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 Just mount it the other way up and take it off turn other way up to bleed. I know some one that does this on this site. Quote
clivegto Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 Picture of smallish brembo's the older silver one is lighter than the gold new one, they have the same distance mounting bolt spacings. I made the caliper hanger with the aid of my drill & angle grinder. Quote
Dezza Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 The older one should be gold: it's from the old 'Goldline' range of the mid-1980s. I bought one many moons ago from Spondon. The newer version is the budget mass-produced version now common on Italian bikes . Quote
