Havoc Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 Can I put a few more amps through a standard EFE starter motor to mitigate 1425cc's with 13.5:1 CR? Or is the standard starter motor up to that sort of thing? I thank you 1 Quote
Blubber Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 My experience is that the starter motor will be fine but the lead from the solenoid to the starter needs to be upped in size by one step. 1 Quote
vizman Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 Starter motor will handle it Tom (if it’s in decent nic) as the midget says, up the cable size. or be real kool (and brave) try and talk Suzan into carrying a starter trolly around with her. Quote
BushcrafterQC Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 Mesure the voltage drop between the positive lead to the starter and the + battery terminal. If its under 200mv when starting don't worry about changing the cable. Quote

Suzanne has lifted GS1000 s off me in Spain, Italy and Helston, but she was young then. She bumped the old GS every morning, when my old knacker was charging everyone else's batteries. She's gorgeous, but naahhh. 4 Quote
GSX1100dreamn Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 I replaced all the spindly original cables for freely acquired 16mm2 cables. Using a newer 1250 Bandit starter relay. I also use a 750 starter motor cause its what was on it when purchased, they are a electromagnet type stator not the permanent magnet type. Dunno if it is good bad or indifferent but no issues on the 1260. Just the usual starter clutch bolt munching. Also as the 1100 alternator is limited and having alot more power draw 1260/EFI I put two batteries a lithium 290cca and a new bandit 230cca for a 'theoretical' 520cca. and a bit of AmpH reserve, nearly two years and no flat battery or poor starting. Also put a Shindegen reg/rec off the Bandit too. Cheers Andrew. Quote
Spazpecker Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 Yep, lithium has some kick when they've warmed up. I like the double battery idea. Quote
Reinhoud Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 My GS1000 suffered from a slipping starter clutch when I had a hih CR kit on it.. Quote
Gixer1460 Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 One way of giving the starter clutch bolts an easier time with high CR is spin motor over with ign. switched off, once spinning, engage ign. It really does help, also gets a little oil around, pre running loads. 1 Quote
Screwriverracing Posted May 12, 2021 Posted May 12, 2021 (edited) Another idea is put two batteries on and run them in series for the starter motor, gives 24 volts at starter and spins over a lot easier, run rest of electrics off just one of the batteries.Did this on our dragbike without any problem 13/1 comp. Cheers SRR Edited May 14, 2021 by Screwriverracing Mistake woops Quote
