SheepDog
Hi guys, Getting to the pointy end of my GSX1100ESD rebuild. I had the petrol cap off with picture showing condition. After attacking it with some emery paper to prep it for a fresh coat of paint I was pleasantly surprised as to the alloy below the paint. I assume this is standard alloy on petrol caps. Your thoughts on what I should do. Just buff and polish and clear coat it OR prime and repaint with black paint again. I'm just a little amazed as to how it looks right now and possibly will I get sick of looking at it on top of the white petrol tank. Quote Link to comment
Tony Nitrous
My 1100 Kat was the same. Came up nice with a bit of Autosol so I left it like that. Bike had a few polished bits. Cap went dull if neglected for ages but came good again easy enough. Quote Link to comment
wraith
My kat one was the same, did polish it but it looked odd with the silver polished bits, so I painted it black. 1 Quote Link to comment
imago
Isn't that the metal that's under the original (piss thin) chrome? Quote Link to comment

I know the caps on the katana are that brass colour type not silver. So I presume that Mr Suzuki used the same cap for other models, not the he does that 1 Quote Link to comment

If you see a scratched/worn cap from an ET or whatever it's that brass colour underneath the chrome. 1 Quote Link to comment

TLRS
If you like the finish on it as a piece, why decide now? Quote Link to comment
johnr
i think its brass, itll polish to a mirror finish if thats your bag! 1 Quote Link to comment
SheepDog
I'm thinking wet and dry at a fine cut, Autosol, buff, then a clear coat or two. If I change my mind it'll be easy to just ruff it up, prime and paint black again. Cheers guys. 2 Quote Link to comment
cnap504
When I was getting my SZ going I soaked the tank cap in carb cleaner, it loosened up the black paint and I wound up with a brass colored cap Edited May 27, 2023 by cnap504 Quote Link to comment

I polished the one on my 750ED and use NeverDull to keep it shiny. Looks great in contrast to the maroon/black paint scheme on my bike. Quote Link to comment
SheepDog
Ok, I know this topic may be a little long winded but I decided on painting it black for pure aesthetics. It just looks the part black. 1 Quote Link to comment
