CockneyRick Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 After a 3-4 very slow turn overs it fired into life with fresh fuel in. Not ran since last Sept while zorst was re-made. Well happy it just fired up. Although the turn over struggle is an ongoing thing? Battery is a Motobatt, & only 6 months old on trickle over winter. The starter has been disassembled & cleaned & looks ok. The earth lead looks good too. Any other ideas peeps? 3 Quote
Jaydee Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 Did you check for any oxidisation or looseness on the solenoid contacts? Might be struggling to get enough power supply. Quote
CockneyRick Posted July 6, 2015 Author Posted July 6, 2015 Nope, but considering this was a ground up build, i'd be very surprised if that was the case. Will look later ;-) Quote
KATANAMANGLER Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 Does it have the standard 1000 bores Rick or is it a bigger bore. Quote
gsx Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 Have you tried the screwdriver across the solenoid pick ups just to rule out anything else 1 Quote
CockneyRick Posted July 6, 2015 Author Posted July 6, 2015 Starter clutch was rebuilt, Its bored out to 1100 too, but always struggled even before. As for screwdriver, it turns over & starts so not much point in doing that is there? Quote
Guest Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 Nice bike, Are they marzocchi shocks on the rear? Quote
arnout Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 ..Battery is a Motobatt, & only 6 months old on trickle over winter.. Try another (known good) battery just to rule failure of the Motobatt out.. (I don't understand why people put trickle chargers on AGM batteries.. They don't need them, and are likely to do more harm than good..) Quote
johnr Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 that exhaust system is just the most beautiful piece of exhaust pipework ive seen in a long while. Quote
kenty Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 actually a screwdriver across the solenoid would be a good idea , if it turns over quicker it would point to a dodgy starter solenoid . Quote

CockneyRick Posted July 6, 2015 Author Posted July 6, 2015 Def not the battery, have had 3 on it. MF & Yuasa & Motobatt. All with same result. If anything the Motobatt performs best ;-) Quote
Gpz1100_Convert Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 when my efe starter played up i blew it out, cleared all dust, got some fine (very fine) emery bloth to clean the commutater then using a small screwdriver i cleaned between the comutator segments. Been fine for years after that. No more battery starter issues at all.Mark Quote

CockneyRick Posted July 7, 2015 Author Posted July 7, 2015 Nice bike, Are they marzocchi shocks on the rear? Not really sure, always thought they were & they have the basic internal structure as strada's but are square shape. Cannot find any info on em anywhere? Quote
ABDW Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Jump start from a running car would rule out battery issue entirely.Have you tried a different starter on there?High resistance across starter solenoid could be checked with a meter easy enough?Has the head been skimmed or anything that would increase compression causing the issue? How do from Sunny south coast BTW cockneyrick! long time no see, I used to be rustykat and you stayed at my flat to watch the footy down south! Rsvfletch Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Run another earth from the motor to the frame mate you'd be amazed! Exhaust looks better now it's been expertly modified! Ps are they your tits on your avatar??! 1 Quote
wraith Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Had the same problem over spring on my GS1000, the battry was 6 mouths old and the bike was used over winter but in spring the bike was getting slower and slower to start tryed all the bits out like you, ended up putting a new battery on it and it now spins over nice and fast and starts first time.So I'd try a new battery. CockneyRick Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 To clear this up, 3 different batteries over 3 years. Start issue is same come sun or snow. Starter/Earth have both been checked & cleaned. I will now look in to a 2nd Earth & the solenoid. Oh & the tits belong to the GF ;-) Quote
FOD Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 You tried a diffrent starter motor? (seems the next natural step)FOD Quote
busa ash Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Bike looks bang on , even better in the metal , be good to have a spare starter or a reconditioned one or possibly borrow one of someone local if it starts quicker job done ;-) Quote
