Cedric Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 Trying to remove the carbs without succes so far. Is this the correct methode? 1. Remove the rear section of the air filter box. The bit that holds the filter. 2. Loosen the rings that clamb the carbs to the inlet rubbers. 3. Pull varbs free from inlet rubbers 4. Loosen the air box (front section air filter) from carbs 5. Release throttle and choke cable 6. Pull out carbs Or, (point 2) do I leave the rubbers tightend on carbs and do I release them from engine so I pull carbs from engine with rubber attached to carbs? Or, do I first loosen the air box, so carbs can move around a bit easier? Any tip welcome. Sorry for high rookie level question. Quote
TonyGee Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 have you undone the front airbox bolts ? once they are off the front part of the airbox will move back enough to pull the carbs out. Quote
Blubber Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 (edited) I vaguely remember pushing the airbox rubbers in to get more wiggle room. I cannot remember if that was a succes but hey... we still had Guilders back when i owned a ET Edited January 20, 2021 by Blubber Quote
TonyGee Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 (edited) two 6mm bolts at the top of the front airbox, once they are removed the airbox will drop out of the way it might help taking the two chrome end covers off as well. Edited January 20, 2021 by TonyGee 1 Quote
Fazz711 Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 +1 on pushing the rubbers into the air box to give a bit of room. Also undo bolts and push air box back Quote

Cedric Posted January 22, 2021 Author Posted January 22, 2021 Carbs are off. What worked for me: 1. Loosen airbox and push back to make room. 2. Spay WD40 on/in carb-rubber joint. 3. Wiggle carbs up, down. And pull, and wiggle, and pull. Thanks for the tips. Quote
Pudzrx Posted January 23, 2021 Posted January 23, 2021 Thats the easy bit unfortunately, getting them back in once the rubbers have hardened and trying not to fold them whilst trying to line up 8 x spigots. All part of the 'fun' tho , lol. Good luck , puddy 1 Quote
Cedric Posted February 26, 2022 Author Posted February 26, 2022 Putting them back on went quite easy actually. What made the difference was an extra pair of hands. Wiggle one side in, hold it there, while someone else wiggles the other side in. Now filling them with fuel. Hopefully they wont leak. Dont fancy going through this again... 2 Quote
TonyGee Posted February 26, 2022 Posted February 26, 2022 did you do a bench leak test before re-fitting them ? 1 Quote

What a good idea! Never thought of it, as I'm not very experienced... Uhm, yeah, they are leaking... Well, at least I'm getting more experienced at removing en refitting carburators . 3 Quote
Cedric Posted February 27, 2022 Author Posted February 27, 2022 Am I assuming right that the gaskets need replacing? Quote

It depends on where its leaking, if its leaking inside the venturi of the carb then its likely to be the float valve, if its coming from the top of the float bowl (where the gasket is) then it could be the gasket, but if the carbs are sat upright (float bowl horizontal) the fuel shouldn't get that far up !!!! also check the pipes connecting the carbs together. 1 Quote
Dezza Posted February 27, 2022 Posted February 27, 2022 A couple of old retort stands (look on eb@y) and a cat litter tray from Wilkos are very useful when bench testing carbs for leaks. 1 Quote
