Joseph Posted August 11, 2020 Posted August 11, 2020 Hi I've done a search but really can't figure why i'm getting oil seepage from the filter The engine surface seemd clean, dont know whether i overtightened the filter ? But i dont think so Really annoying that such a stupid job is keeping the bike off the road Quote
Blubber Posted August 11, 2020 Posted August 11, 2020 Check if there is the an old or previously overtightened o-ring present ...as in fused to the engine side. It almost looks if its meant to be there but is not. You need to see bare metal on the spin on part for your new oil filter. Quote
banoffee Posted August 11, 2020 Posted August 11, 2020 Brand new oil filter, right? Did you lightly oil the outer edge of the sealing ring? How tight did you tighten it? Quote
Gixer1460 Posted August 12, 2020 Posted August 12, 2020 Strange as I don't think i've ever had a spin on filter leak! Fill with oil, lube the o ring, clean the case face, screw on hand tight - job done! Even had over tightened ones with filter case metal touching case face - no leaks! Quote
Joseph Posted August 12, 2020 Author Posted August 12, 2020 No seal left on the block, i tightened it as per the haynes, hand screw till contact then 2 turns (almost) A mate mentioned the leak may be coming from higher up, i need to check the cam cover and oil return tubes, the engine being black and me working underneath yesterday evening i may have missed the oil is just dripping from the filter giving the impression that its at fault I'll have a look and keep you posted Quote
Gixer1460 Posted August 12, 2020 Posted August 12, 2020 Could well be - have you serviced the valves / tappets recently as those seals on the cam cover are notorious for getting misplaced and oil leaking down the plug holes and out of the well drain hole! Quote
banoffee Posted August 12, 2020 Posted August 12, 2020 Clean off all the oil with brake cleaner and compressed air or degreaser and wash and dry it. Then run it up until you find the highest point it’s coming from. Could be the oil tubes on the front or the rocker gasket but best to diagnose it properly. Quote
Joseph Posted August 12, 2020 Author Posted August 12, 2020 Hey Right well so far i have done the following - removed filter to check mating surface condition. Looks fine. - checked for seepage at the return tubes, top and bottom. Looks dry - checked beneath the exhausts at the drain hole area. Looks dry - removed the plug coils, checked in the plug well. Looks dry - checked the edge of the rocked gasket qll round, looks dry - checked cylinder to block and head to cylinder surfaces. Looks dry Stumped Quote
Blubber Posted August 12, 2020 Posted August 12, 2020 There is a folded edge on the filter... maybe that is leaking? Quote
Captain Chaos Posted August 13, 2020 Posted August 13, 2020 What kind of filter? Original Suzuki, or some inferior copy? Quote
Dezza Posted August 13, 2020 Posted August 13, 2020 "Hand tight, then 2 full turns" sounds like overtightening to me. Something like" hand tight, then 1/4 to 1/2 a turn" sounds the way I do mine but "hand tight" is a fairly subjective term. Quote
Joseph Posted August 13, 2020 Author Posted August 13, 2020 Well, basically, on cars i've always hand tightened them, on this seeing leak i thought maybe it should be tighter. So i did. Then checking the haynes it stated screw till contact then 2 turns, so thats what i did on my last attempt Anyways. No idea whats going wrong. Quote
banoffee Posted August 13, 2020 Posted August 13, 2020 Sounds like you’ve tried everything else, so it’s now time to try a turbo 4 Quote

Maybe the Haynes typesetters fucked up and put 2 instead of 1/2 Quote
Joseph Posted August 13, 2020 Author Posted August 13, 2020 (edited) Highly likely, i have a Reliant Robin they got the ignition timing setting wrong in the Haynes manual ahaha But still, I must be missing something somewhere, it makes no sense Edited August 13, 2020 by Joseph Quote
Crass Posted August 18, 2020 Posted August 18, 2020 Personally, irrespective of the instructions on the filter, I'm with Dezza. Tight as I can get it by hand then nip it up with a filter wrench no more than a quarter turn, probably less. Quote
Joseph Posted August 23, 2020 Author Posted August 23, 2020 Right, well turns out the 2 sump screws below the filter were not there, fitting them did get the engine drip free. Concentrating on finding the usuals stopped me from spotting that 2 Quote
Ivan Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 How can to tight be a reason for leacking oil? Quote
Ted M Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 15 hours ago, Ivan said: How can to tight be a reason for leacking oil? It can crimp up the oil seal mate, one of the reasons to put a smear of oil on it before fitting it. Quote
