  1. buy new needles, ive seen wd40 tubes, coffee stirrers, even playmobil knights swords used, but nothing looks right. there are a few options for these, you can buy replica needles from a guy in south africa and get them sent to the uk, otherwise, mark one mitsubishi shogun speedo needles are th same shape but slightly longer so need trimming back. theyre not too hard to do, you just need to be spotlessly clean and super gentle removing the old ones, the metal pins up the middle are very delicate and its not worth trying to lever them off, better to protect the faces with a piece of cardboard with a slot cut in it and then gently cut away the plastic with a dremmel, leaving the knurled brass ferrule that the needle is pressed onto. ive a set of these to repair for someone in the club so i may take some pics and post them here.
  2. run all three output phases from the alternator directly into all three input phases on the reg rec, dont worry about colours, theyre unimportant, reg rec will just have 3 yellow inputs, use them in any order. disconnect the loop that goes to the switch and stick pins inn a voodoo doll of suzukis wiring designer, fucker deserves all the pain he gets...
  3. lets also remember that gs/gsx reg recs failed mostly because of the fucking insane way that suzuki chose to wire them as stock with two phases direct to the alternator and a single phase through the lightswitch. if youre fitting a new reg rec but leaving the phases configured as suzuki designed then youre just saving up trouble for another day.
  4. its also possible if the side case has been off recently that the rubber seal round the wires to the alternator or the gasket under the cover have been pinched, damaged, split or misalligned some way.
  5. but dont discount the gs650 shafty on its capacity, its a stonking little motor, same as used in the katana 650, theyre actually 675cc so closer to 700cc really, we toured scotland on one a few years ago, two up, kept up with all the big kats, was a bit wallowy but thats cos the shocks were well past their prime, but the little gs is a belting bike.
  6. neutral light switch sender, they just use an o ring. it might also be from the camchain tensioner, or the o ring sealing the starter motor. take the cover off, give it a good clean with carb cleaner and then run the engine. my guess is the gearchange shaft oil seal though.
  7. put the cooler on, it will come in handy when you fit an oilcooled engine...... ;-)
  8. yes, but the post is about a katana, and the picture is clearly a katana stlyed 8valve motor in a bike, but not a shaft drive engine, so it cant be anything but a 550 kat PLUS, its got screw through end caps on the cylinder head, and the 650 engine didnt have them. i dont think i could really have been clearer.
  9. that looks like a chain drive engine, so a 550, 650 is a shafty.
  10. not all of them are like that pic. like i said, theyre secured from underneath.
  11. 650 motor has the end caps secured from underneath, unlike the other gs models, i might have some but dont hold your breath, thy have a reputation for just flying off on the motorway, never to be seen again!
  12. if you like the look of the standard wheels, then look for a set of katana 400 wheels, theyre 17 inch rear and 18 inch front and the exact same spoke pattern as the old gs/gsx wheels but lighter and much wider than the stock 1100 wheels, the front brakes are also bigger and better than the stockers meaning that you can improve the brakes and handling, put more rubber on the road but retain the standard look of the bike.
  13. can you show us the top shock mounts?
  14. and if youve had your cases painted, make sure they havent painted the contact area for the switch.
  15. when i was building sidecars, first thing i did was change the shocks, always for hagons, you ring them and tell them what you were doing and thy would offer you options on damping and spring strength, then build them to your requirements and for the same price as a set of stock ones, brilliant firm and brilliant service.
  16. that was cos the early gs's used less fuel so didnt need a big hole to fill the tank...........
  17. if its a single cylinder then its unlikely to be coils, try plugs first, then try swapping the coils over to see if the problem moves. im assuming youve done a compression test?
  18. tlr suzuki, monster engine, awful handling, 916 ducati, monster handling, fragile plastecine engine. wouldnt a tl engine in a 916 engine be awesome? answer-yes, and not only did it sound a great idea, but someone even produced a fitting kit to allow the suzuki engine to go into the ducati frame. just imagine a 916 that didnt eat itself if you were 25 minutes too late for a factory service..... ive seen one, and only one, but it was a thing of absolute beauty.
  19. its not mine, credit for this is due to another member on here who posted this to the oss site, probably 2 completely seperate forums ago, but i saved it like many did cos its useful! anyhow, whoever it was originally will probably pop up here soon and we can all thank him personally....
  20. also, these were for gsxr engine into gs/gsx/efe frame iirc
  21. this one? saved from the old site
  22. rattle gun willdo it though. i just did the centre nut on a gsxr diaphragm clutch, popped it in gear, back brake on, and the gun got it off in a few seconds. just dont forget the tab washer on the gsx just in case.
  23. or have a look how the german guys do it, cos of the tuv rules thay cant alter the frame so there are some ingenious monoshock conversions for twin shock suzukis that involve no welding to the frame and so are completely bolt on so reversible if you decide to switch back.
  24. i think that lucky7 sell tophat adaptors to allow you to fit the bandit arm into a gsx/gs/kat frame and also the lugs to weld on to the arm for the twin shocks. you can contact them from the www or through this forum and dont forget to mention your oss discount!
  25. is there any similarity between the oilcooled gsxr range and the gsx1400 motor?
