Nickel Posted July 13, 2018 Posted July 13, 2018 Time to present the outcome of last months work. Sold my unfinished EF Turbo in parts and traded in this Kawasuki that a good mate built years ago. I know this is not the favored frame for you OSS guys, but it’s the right motor. Bike was lurking around as decoration in a living room for the last 4 years before I got it, so it was time to bring it back on the street. At first glance it seemed to be not much work, BUT at a second glance more than I supposed. Only had a short rollout when buying, so I didn’t noticed the bad suspension system. While trying to sort out leaking fork and bad linkage of the swingarm I decided to rework the whole bike and change the complete style. I wasn’t happy about how all the mods had been done to the whole bike, so it was Things that should be changed: suspension of the single sided swingarm, eliminate the Ducati linkage swap the fork, front wheel, yokes and brakes swap the fuel tank (love those Z1R fuel tanks) swap the seat unit and building a complete new subframe swap handlebar, brake pump, clutch pump spend a new wiring loom do some work on the exhaust system and swap the exhaust can change the Milwaukee style forcewinder against oldschool lookin’ K&N air filter Took some time to get all the parts together, meanwhile I nearly finished all the things and I hope to have a first roll out the next weeks. A short tech spec: Ka*a* Z1000ST frame and Z1R fuel tank Ducati 1098 single sided swigarm Ducati 1098 rear wheel widened to 7,5x17 Wilbers shock for direct linkage Hayabusa frontend with billet yokes Ka*a* KZ250 seat unit with selfmade seat cushion Yoshimura tri oval exhaust can GSXR 1100 motor with draw thru turbo Garrett turbo charger and Mikuni carb Dyna 2000 ECU Here are some pics of the things that are done. Linkage and shock: New subframe and seat unit: New oil cooler lines for the head cooler, new air filter and first attempt of exhaust, butI’m not sure if I’m happy with the position of the exhaust: Some pics made during sunshine: That's all for today. I hope not to break the rules presenting a Kwakisaki frame Next step is to finish the tank and sort out the wiring. After that it's time to fire it up. 15 Quote
clivegto Posted July 13, 2018 Posted July 13, 2018 Awesom work looks great. What model is the turbo & how big is the carburatta ? Quote
Nickel Posted July 13, 2018 Author Posted July 13, 2018 Thanks for your comments. I'm not sure about the turbo, I think it's a t3. Has a 5 bolt outlet flange. Carb is a Mikuni HSR 42. 1 Quote
Rene EFE Posted July 13, 2018 Posted July 13, 2018 Is it legal on the road in Germany? Looks good Quote

Looks good Yes it is, that's why I bought it and put my "not road legal" Turbo EF in pieces. In 1996 when my mate built it, it was easier to get Turbo systems road legal. Nowadays nearly no chance without really good connections. Quote
Rene EFE Posted July 13, 2018 Posted July 13, 2018 I've seen the paperwork for a German GSX1400 that to me was only lighly modded; it was insane. I can't begin to imagine how it would be for a bike like this. Quote
Nickel Posted July 13, 2018 Author Posted July 13, 2018 Yes, it's a nightmare. First rule: Keep all your bikes, where you got legalized any modifications. Second rule: note first rule By the way, my slabby has 3 pages vehicle papers. Except the fuel tank there's everything modified. Everytime a pleasure to get into a police check. But I'm relaxed with this one, motor, turbo system, swingarm and wheels are street legal, the rest won't be any further issue. 1 Quote
schooter Posted July 15, 2018 Posted July 15, 2018 nickelboy you do the rigth thinks 4the style i like de bike Quote
R1guy Posted July 15, 2018 Posted July 15, 2018 (edited) Looks great. Reminds me of this Edited May 4, 2019 by R1guy 1 Quote
Nickel Posted July 15, 2018 Author Posted July 15, 2018 Yes, this one was little bit of pattern. Tried to use stick coils as Colin has done at his Gia framed Turbo Bandit, but I do not have enough space between motor and tank. The stick coils are to long. Maybe I can find shorter ones. Quote
Madb Posted July 15, 2018 Posted July 15, 2018 long sticks! sure you'll find some shorter ones. loving the stance of the bike. Quote
Nickel Posted February 6, 2019 Author Posted February 6, 2019 Let's get back to work. After big winter depression it's time to go back in the shed and get some work done. Collected some bits an pieces for a new motor. GSXR lump, Bandit barrels bored out to fit Busa Gen 2 pistons, bandit head and cams. Lots of APE stuff a much work in cleaning an measuring. (Off-Topic ): Meanwhile I machined some swingarmextensions for a future slabby project. Next is to get the tank done. Machined an adapter to fit a pingle fuel tap. 3 Quote
Gixer1460 Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Re : Earlier question about the turbo - it could be a T2 or a T25, they also had 5 / 6 bolt outlet flanges - well my T2 did. Do you know the power output as my T2 had everything max'd out for flow and made 210rwhp max @ 10psi - wouldn't make any more but it was still internally gated so it probably didn't help. Quote
Nickel Posted February 6, 2019 Author Posted February 6, 2019 Last Dyno Run with this Turbo says 205hp at nearly 1bar boost. Was done years ago with a gsxr 1100 motor only with reduced CR. 1 Quote
Nickel Posted February 24, 2019 Author Posted February 24, 2019 Found some time to solder the fuel tap flange into the tank. Have to perform a pressure test to be sure the soldering is tight. After that it's time to take the parts to the painter. I actually have no idea what colour. Quote

Nickel Posted May 10, 2019 Author Posted May 10, 2019 After some test rides it turned out, that I'll need a fuel pump. As discussed in the thread from clivetgo gravity fuel supply does not work. After short time with full throttle and boost the float bowl is empty and the motor starves. I'll go the way using the fuel pump, that was built into the system when I bought the bike. Does anybody has some advice for good spark plugs? Actually I'm using NGK spark plugs, but if these plugs get wet once, they do not make any good sparks. Heard about Denso spark plugs, that were better. Can anybody confirm this? Thanks 1 Quote
Gixer1460 Posted May 10, 2019 Posted May 10, 2019 I see from above you are using an HSR42 carb - unfortunately, whilst they are a great carb they do have a pitifully small float bowl which shows up on usually turbo'd applications............ Hardly Abletoo's don't seem to suffer LOL! There is a float bowl extension available that may help? A pump will get over the problem but at high power most LP pumps still struggle to keep up with demand! Picture from Mr Turbo in the US. 2 Quote
Duckndive Posted May 10, 2019 Posted May 10, 2019 My 1216 Draw Thru runs Gravity Feed to an S&S "Tractor Carb" 245BHP and 9.5 1/4 Quarters no starvation "but the carb has huge float bowl" My Old 1198 EFE Draw thru with T3 and HSR 42 ran gravity feed and was fine on the road as long as tank was above 1/2 full.....I added a pump and reg set at 2 PSI that I could switch on when I did RWYBs and it was fine 9.8 1/4s..... I was going to try a regulated line from plenum to pressurise tank under boost but never got round to it.... BigCC posted on face ache on a similar thread " Float bowl spacer is not a solution . Fuel flow v pressure is" And Added This was making 400+hp on the track with a HSR48 & Big CC carb mods 3 Quote
