With my 550 I had the same. I have rebuilt the engine so running wasn't an issue for me. Depends what you are going to do.

If it was me, the fact that it turns over and it goes through the gears would be okay for me. I'd just get on with it. If it's sat that long you will need to get your carbs stripped and cleaned for sure.

Yeah I had all intentions of the carbs been sonic clesned anyway I was just not sure whether or not to try fiting it up before going any further

Were the carbs drained do you know. If not the fuel that's left in will have dried up and blocked the smaller ports. You may get it running without a clean!  Good luck which way you go.

Was the motor left with oil in it and has it been turned over over the years?

The worst you may find when you start it is that the valve seals have dried up and let some oil in the cylinders, but if it was me, I'd just get the project done and then see how the motor runs. You can always sort the motor out later.

Too late to start it now as all the wiring loom is now removed plus when I took the carbs off they had a thick white coat of smeg in the bottom

Just need a chain splitter and then I can drop the engine out

That will be the remains of the petrol from over the years of just sitting there.  If you are changing the rear end you will probably need a different length chain, so dremmel a link out :)

So I can slot a TL front straight on ? No mods ?

you only need to sort out the bearings and the end stops. Offcourse the stem needs to have the right length.
