  1. cheers @wraith. I'll take a looksee
  2. Hi. I have managed to get a set of 4-2 exhausts for my 1980 GS550 model. It has the link pipe. The silencers are a bit naff. Looking for ideas. Is it possible to change the silencers and keep the downpipes etc?
  3. Cheers @Gixer1460. Now I know I can do the timing and cam line up ,. The removal and swap around seems a good idea. Andy
  4. Hi. Setting the clearance on the valves is proving to be a pain. Haynes says do it either upright or horizontal (left or right) depending on inlet / exhaust. Okay so I get a reading of 0.09mm, which is too much, 0.03 - 0.08mm is the range. I'm sure I have read go towards the larger gap, but could be wrong. Anyway, how do I get the shim out without removing the cams again? All the gaps vary between 0.03 and 1.04mm I know the size of shims within the engine, and think I can move a couple around to decrease the high reading and increase the low. Where can I get shims at a reasonable price? TIA Andy
  5. Cheers @Gixer1460. Moved across a tooth and alls good at the moment. Just the joy of putting the carbs back with the air box. Ta
  6. Hi. I am trying to set the timing /camshaft timing marks. I have set the timing mark to the 'T' mark, however I can't get the exhaust mark @ 2 to be vertical. It's leaning slightly left. Is getting the 20 links pins between exhaust 2 and inlet 3 mark more important than the arrow being vertical? Sorry it's a bit of a weird question, but I assume having this out of sync will end up with bent valves and hard to set TIA Andy
  7. Not that I have the skills, but I would think tig filling the hole and starting again! Just my pennies worth.
  8. Thanks for the input guys. Motobatt ordered
  9. Thanks @markfoggy. I thought this would be a simple yes or no,. I hadn't realised there was so many variations of thread inserts
  10. Doh,,. It's a GS550. Cheers anyway @Jaydee. Best place to get them?
  11. Hi,. Gone and stripped one of the breather cover threads. Can I get away with an unbranded helicoil kit, or should I go with a Bergen, or Helicoil kit thanks
  12. Hi guys looking for a replacement battery for my 750es. Looking at Motobatt, but confused over which model. The bike us on an 89 plate, not sure if this makes it an esf or esf model. Anyone help? Thanks
  13. I have a set of Dyna 3ohm coils and Taylor leads, that came with a project bike I haven't started, will they work on the GS550? Don't want to fuck 'em up !
  14. They are new caps, but the leads are moulded into the coil itself. Wouldn't know how to change them out.
  15. Right I have fully tested the coils, and the readings are within spec. However when I started the bike plug 1 / header 1 was cold until I moved the cable. Is it possible that the cable is physically breaking down under load? Think I'm just going to replace both coils with some Chinese copies, unless someone has a good working pair with leads going cheap!
  16. i have found how how to test the coils and I get the following readings: Primary 3.5 ohms. Secondary 23.5k ohms, with caps on. Just need to find the specs to see if this is correct. These readings are are very similar both sides.
  17. @TommyTucker. Thanks I'll check the jets and try upsizing them. Think I may still have an issue with the coils, or at least one of them. I have tested the primary side and they are reading 3.2. - 3.5 ohms, however when I connect to the secondary I only get open circuit, must not be doing it right though.
  18. @Ben Slabby. Yep, and even double checked. They were new so won't fall out.
  19. @jamie k. Wow great list of things to check. The bike came with a 4-1 but I didn't know if it was a runner. I replaced all the jets / rubber seals etc but I didn't check if the previous owner had re-jetted for it. I do have a 4-2 I can put on and check if it runs any better. I'll go through the list and check what I can
  20. @chunky. Will try tomorrow if I get the garage.
  21. @vizman. If learning to suck eggs again fixes I will gladly do so. I will check the throttle and run tomorrow if I get to the garage.
  22. @vizman They look pretty good and pliable. a bit of paint missing from the front on a couple. I have replaced the 'O' rings and replaced the screws with Allen bolts. I replaced all the clamps for new ones, because the old ones looked stretched and didn't feel as if they were tight enough.
