lithium battery gsxr 1100

Recommended Posts

Anyone running a lithium battery on their old oil boiler succesfully? I have a 1986 1100 and heard they are infamous for over charging. I any one is let me know what you had to do to make it work.

Replace all the wiring and check the alternator (they come apert easily). A real time volt meter helps too. The problems are more apparent with aircooled bikes. Oilcooled have a more sophisticated charging system.

I’ve been running a lithium battery on my ‘99 1200 bandit for over 6 months,

Didn’t make any other changes to the charging system, just swapped it out with the old knackered lead/acid battery, not had any issues,

The one I have fitted is an Aliant YLP10

I've had good experiences and bad experiences with them over the years. If there are any faults in your charging/starting system, a lithium battery is pretty good at finding them. At the same time, I've had them in dirt bikes where I know the charge was all over the place and never had any problems, but it was also a kick only bike. Only thing they really don't like is the cold. Turning the headlights on for a minute while getting your gear on before trying to start the bike was usually enough when I used to run one year round.

It's all I've used all year round for almost a decade now on AC/OC bikes

On air cooled bikes you just need to pair it with an electronic reg/rec, Mosfet FH020 is the one you want (fitted to many Yamahas among others)

Does that include EFEs? I'm just using the standard Suzuki one with my Lithium battery.

Yes, the EFE is the same stator charging technology as the other air cooled OSS bikes, i fitted an 1135 engine in my kat along with said reg/rec and small battery (all stuffed under the seat) and it performed very well.

I've seen grief over lithium batteries but i've not had any on my installs, i can only give feedback on what i've seen.

They're sensitive to temperature, when it's cold, i put the full beam on for a couple of minutes to get the battery warmed up and it's cranking capacity good, then it goes fine

Tempting fate as they aren't the most reliable of devices - charging queries every year prove this!

Yes indeed, on the five air cooled i've had they all got a new stator, whether it was from the get go or soon after.

Pairing it with a that modern reg/rec avoids it burning out again (and also removing the wire that goes all the way to the handlebar switch from the stator on the ones that have it)

Good Info! (y) I replaced the alternator a couple of years back. Looks like I can get a secondhand MOSFET unit for a BMW for about £40 on eBlag. Might be the way to go?

I fitted a Lithium battery a couple of years ago (Exide), as I needed to move the battery and needed something very small that could still crank the 1230cc motor easily. Not had any trouble so far, but I don't do a lot of millage on it TBH.

Always bought second hand for mine. Be wary of the new ones at attractive prices for obvious reasons

I talked to the guys from Rick Electric about a reg/rec they don't make on for the bike. Due to the fact they run an altenator. Anyone know a source i can get one for the the bike?? Or maybe i should just get an agm. I would like to put a lithium in as it is mounted under the seat.

Oil cooled engines have the reg/rec integral to the alternator, the air cooled bikes have the seperate item, so you don't need to address that point on your bike

Strange thing for a 'specialist' to say, seeing as virtually EVERY bike for the last 40+ years uses an Alternator! Maybe they meant - its integrated on Oil Cooled bike units? Even with these doing the 'Charging Mod' is sensible to get rock solid output that battery will appreciate!
