Gsxr wheels on Bandit 1200 2002 ?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I need to change my front wheel on my gsf1200 2002. I had nice chrome wheels but now changing the wheels for new ones is the same price as the value of the bike. I looked into getting them fixed but it’s pretty bad and there’s a chance they won’t be able to fix it.

I bumped into someone who had a bandit 10years ago and told me that the gsxr wheels were compatible but could not tell me which model for sure.

They both are 17” and 3.5” width.

The newbie that I am is tempted to buy it since it is more readily available than the bandit ones and cheaper but I want to make sure I won’t have any issues fitting the disk, spacers or any other parts I’m trying to remember from the diagram.

any tips?

It’s the garage that told me that the wobbly feeling I had wasn’t the tire that was done and deformed but the rim that was bent. There’s some intense dent we can’t really see that well in the picture I guess but some are like 20-30mm out… my hesitation was that the only shop that seem to do that less than 3 hours away said because of the chrome it might ruined the wheel.

What chrome? that looks like polished aluminum with a clear coat over it to protect it

Sort of agree! Chromed aluminium is unusual as it doesn't take to electro plating process very well hence why it's anodised more often which is a dye process.

Are there any maker's marks on the wheel? There may be something on the inside on the rim only visible when the tyre is removed. If you can find out what make wheel it is then you can find out about it's construction, what's wrong with it and how to go about getting it fixed :)

Thank you all for all the valuable insights. The wheel is bent according to the mechanic and the disk is making a noise while riding. That last visit to the shop made me want to do more myself. If the wheel is bent to the point it causes issue with the brakes. I would have expected them to call me before putting the tire on… now I have to remove the wheels, disks and tire and bring it to the rim fixing shop…

Get the front end of the bike up on a stand. And spin the wheel yourself. Take a wooden ruler, lay it against the fork. And put it close to the rim. If there’s run out/bend in the rim you will see it. There are shops where you can ship your rim and they can straighten them. The disc making noise could be just a bent disc.

Are you sure the wheel is bent ?

usually if the rim is bent, the discs don't rub.
Maybe the issue is in your brake calipers (piston stuck), or have a bent brake disc ?
Bent disc is way more common, especially after braking hard and keeping the brakes engaged at standstill while hot ...

B12 discs are 2 mm less offset than slingy ones. The forks in the picture are slingy ones, so the disce will be fine with that set up and B12 or slingy wheel:tu

So, a 1993 GSXR 1100 front setup would need some spacers on either calipers or discs? (I have the 1993 GSXR forks lying on a shelf for my mk1 1200 Bandit)
