Gammaboy Posted July 4, 2019 Author Posted July 4, 2019 So, haven't had much time to work on the bike lately - spent a week on holiday in Adelaide - couple of days out in the Barossa drinking wine in lovely weather and just generally not doing much. Have had some deliveries though - a GSXR level sensor thanks to @sev, and an original Bimota SB6 sales brochure (first time i've ever done the original brochure thing - what have I become?). Biggest score though, thanks to another Bimota owner from another forum I've nabbed the seat bumstop part from Eblag - it's not perfect, but it's not bad, and it was cheap enough, especially with a 10% off code. It was also local, so 6 hours after seeing the message on my phone, it was sitting on the passenger seat of the daily driver. I had intended to carve a buck from foam and make it a hollow carbon shell for additional storage volume, but the time saving of slapping a standard one on outweighs the advantage at the moment. Anyway, really need to get some time on the lathe to knock up a new upper half for the SRAD tap to make it more like an original and fix my routing issues, knock up an adaptor to fit the GSXR level switch to the Bim tank, and knock up a couple of fairing spacers and the pipes for the block between the carb stubs... then the tank and fuel system will be done, and ready to start the bike... Oh, and I managed to score a Muzzy Aluminium rad fan - the SB6s are even more prone to melting the stocker than the GSXRs... it's currently in transit from the US. And some random SB6 porn, just because. 2 Quote
Gammaboy Posted July 30, 2019 Author Posted July 30, 2019 So... progress. Because of possible upcoming changes in a) my personal circumstances, and b) the legislation around imports here, I need to get a bit of a wriggle on with this thing - so at the behest of my other half, I've started cutting back on what I do that will take vast amounts of time - i'd already done this with the seat, and so instead of stripping the battery box and painting it myself, I subbed it out for powder... got it back the next day, which was a surprise! (need to clean the workbench up, i know!) It's now reinstalled - pretty happy to have not done this one myself! I've also subbed out the milling on the fuel tap to a mate, rather than me making time to go and do it on a mates mill. Biggest bit of time has been spent getting the shitty delaminating chopped strand reinforcing out of the seat unit. I really don't understand why they used crappy polyester resin and chopped strand to reinforce the very nicely laid, vac bagged epoxy and cloth main seat unit/tank cover. Was a bit of a prick of a job, but it's out now. Next step is re-reinforcing it with carbon. I also ground back the repairs that need doing in the main fairing, but of course forgot pics. Delamination before I got stuck into it: One side done, just working on the second... And it's all out. Had a fair bit of thickness to it, should be able to get the same level of strength with some unidirectional carbon I have and a couple of layers of cloth over the top. 2 Quote
Maggotbreath Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Jezubs, that's a lot of crap right there!!! Quote
Solcambs Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 Getting there. So service done, immediate issues sorted? Sounds like you just need to install parts on route, and fire up? Quote
Gammaboy Posted August 6, 2019 Author Posted August 6, 2019 Yeah, pretty much. I need to sort the fiberglass repairs and the new reinforcement of the seat unit, but apart from that, it's a case of slap on some fresh tires, fresh brake pads and the bits that are enroute, then slot it in for compliancing. Unfortunately, I've been flat out with jobs around the house - looks like I might have a job that will be shipping me off to Germany for 12-18 months, so need to sort out some immediate issues around the house. Quote
Gammaboy Posted August 8, 2019 Author Posted August 8, 2019 in the interest of making things happen faster, I got a guy quote on getting some carbon laid up as reinforcement... can't justify the cost, so looks like I'm doing it myself... If it was going to be the lower end of the guy's quote, I'd just get him to sort it. Quote
Gammaboy Posted August 29, 2019 Author Posted August 29, 2019 Still haven't had a chance to sort the glass work, but pulled the rear shock out last night so I can take it for a fresh bumpstop and seals - 8,000km (5,000miles) in ~24 years means it's in very nice nick, but the rubber bits will be unhappy. Super easy job to get it out - spent more time looking for a dropped 6mm washer than pulling it out of the bike. Quote

It's only ~185mm diameter, GSXR1100 fan is 205. fucks sake. Anyway, I got some time to work on the seat unit on monday - basically got the black paint/overspray/polyester resin sanded/ground back to bare glass/epoxy (which was about 3 1/2 hours work) and said fuckit, and dropped it off to the guy I'd spoken to about doing the carbon for me previously. With new job imminent, it's going to be touch and go in terms of me having enough time to get the bike back together before I go, so figured that was something I could comfortably sub out and save a bunch of time. I guess at least with having done the prep work, it's cut back significantly on the labour I'll be paying, that and having sold some more parts means it's eating into my slush fund less. Speaking of parts, I picked up the fuel tap upper that I'd gotten a mate to do the milling on last night - of course, I've forgotten to take photos. Will snap some this evening. This means I'm getting close to being able to light the thing up! Should have the shock back tomorrow or friday, and the seat unit next week... Quote
Gammaboy Posted September 11, 2019 Author Posted September 11, 2019 Just picked up the shock - couple of days late, but came in under the quote by 20% so can't complain. Have spent some time sorting some electrickery - just have to glue the headlights back together and that part of it should be sorted... *might* get it started this weekend. 1 Quote

Gammaboy Posted September 11, 2019 Author Posted September 11, 2019 Shocks back in. Never had a bike that's so quick to get the shock in and out of (well, except the Kat) - with the seat unit already off, it's lift the tank off, drop the carbs out of their rubbers and move to one side, belt the shock in, pull the footpeg hanger to run the reservoir line, and bolt it all back together. 15 minutes tops. Aaaand I've just recieved a text message that the seat unit is ready to pick up! And in other news, the new job is finally happening, so there's a solid chance that I'll be screwing everything back together and leaving it on a stand in a mate's mancave for 12-18 months... Quote
Gammaboy Posted September 18, 2019 Author Posted September 18, 2019 Progress. Horrible horrible progress! Fuel tap finally sorted out: Top half is custom, internals are SRAD, with a Pingel screen (thanks to @KATANAMANGLER- I owe you a beer or two!) And Plumbed in (well, except for the vac line - I'll use another bit of vac hose to manually prime the carbs, then hook it up. Spent a little time replacing the main breather hose to the carbs, fucking around with wiring for the tail lights, battery mounting foam and installing the batteries, so we're at a point where I can chuck fuel in it and light it up... Oh yeah, and a crappy shot of the carbon inside the seat. Need to sort some new heat shielding for it. 4 Quote

Gammaboy Posted September 24, 2019 Author Posted September 24, 2019 So, the Corse Titanium exhaust old mate thought he had hanging in another storage unit unfortunately turned out to be for a SB8... so I really should have bought the TMRs instead of hanging onto the money for an exhaust that didn't exist... oh well. Given the new accelerated timeline for my travels, this thing isn't coming with me, and i need to screw it and the Mito together enough for them to go into storage without me losing any bits.. Sigh. Quote
Dezza Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 (edited) Would TMRs fit though? It all looks a bit tight! I ask as getting RS 38s on my Spondon is not as easy as it first appears. I thought I'd have plenty of space but even getting the fuel hose routing right is a pain in the arse. Edited September 25, 2019 by Dezza Quote

I know of some one who fitted FCR39 to their SB6, But they did do all sorts of funkiness to get them in. 2 Quote
Gammaboy Posted September 25, 2019 Author Posted September 25, 2019 Yeah, the fuckery to fit FCRs is a hard no. This guy fitted TMRs to a SB7 by just using a wedge spacer under the carb rubbers - I suspect with the taller 1100 in there they'd go straight on. http://kenworks77.sakura.ne.jp/wp01/sb7-rest/ From looking at other bikes where TMRs were used to replace BT-SS mikunis, the TMRs are basically a drop in swap, same cables in almost the same spot, same lengths and diameters so all the rubbers and airboxes work... That FCR fed SB6 is also using a SRAD tap - which works fine if you don't have to try and make the fuel lines work with the stock airbox... Anyway, my timelines have relaxed a little with my move, so in theory I'd be able to get the SB6 complianced and registered before going, but that would mean either a brand new set of tyres sitting for 18 months, or bringing the bike to Germany and using it a handfull of times over there... Interesting - the TMR fitment in the link pics uses a cable operated choke, the kind of thing I need for my RS38s but just can't find anything in the UK at the moment. Do FCRs have a cable choke? For the SB6 it would be impossible to use a stock RS type choke knob as the frame is in the way. This is the problem I have with my Spondon project bike as it's not particually convenient to have to remove the tank every time the bike is started from cold (unless the accellerator pumps could be used for this purpose????????). Quote
Macduff Posted September 29, 2019 Posted September 29, 2019 Don't think FCRs have a choke option (or the ones I have on a duc don't) they rely on a couple of squirts from the accelerator pump and a tweak of the idle speed knob for cold starts. 1 Quote

skylinespeedster Posted August 20, 2020 Posted August 20, 2020 Looking at this sb6. Guy willing to take my black 1100wr in px. My bike plus 2.3 k approx. Sb6 done 18k. Apparently no frame damage. Always cautious where frame protectors fitted. Clue apparently if its been over footpegs dent swinging arm. Pig to work on but always wanted a bimota and kb2,s way out of my pay grade. 2 Quote
Cunnerz77 Posted October 17, 2020 Posted October 17, 2020 Ya learn something new everyday. I started here thinking you'd shoehorned the 1100 in. Absolutely mega bike and love all the flash bits. Just read a bit on the model. Very interesting. Quote
