Rene EFE
It's easy for the oilcooled world to go proper racing and get away with "unplanned dismounts" due to the fact that Heavy Duty case covers such as NRC exist. For the aircooled school of things, this is a bit different. What are the off-the-shelve options, if any? How did you do this yourself or what have you seen on your travels?Pic for your attention Quote Link to comment
KATANAMANGLER
With an air cooled engine you need to get your body between the engine and the track. It doesn't matter with an oil cooled engine. 3 Quote Link to comment
Gammaboy
I think the issue with beefing up the ignition cover is it makes it much more likely to snap the mounting bosses out of the case - having said that, Back on the old forum one of the guys was offering heavy duty billet ignition covers (with a flat machined off it for better ground clearance) - Can't remember his name - Kiwi fella that was racing a GS1000 (I think his business got bought out, and then he went working on the oil rigs?). He also did neoprene cam cover seals for both types of GSX1100 cam covers and GS1000 (but not EFE).There was also a guy here in Oz doing a cast Magnesium replica of the Yosh ignition cover - much thicker.Bit of a different case for the Alternator side -plenty of bolts to hold that fucker on, but either drag type plates or modified stockers seems to be the common fitment here - never seen anything aftermarket. KATANAMANGLER
Standard cases can ground when you are cornering The air cooled race bikes I've looked at often have a heavy chamfer welded into the lower half of ignition and alternator covers to improve ground clearance. You could have heavy billet machined and welded as reinforcement but the weak point will always be the bosses on the crankcases. Quote Link to comment
Gammaboy
The other trick is using an EFE ignition cover, and drilling a hole in it for the end of the ignition shaft. Quote Link to comment
markfoggy
Bit Direct Loss, but when we've built the one out of a waterjetted 10mm plate I'll post it up. These are a bit light weight at the moment and still touch down. 1 Quote Link to comment
markfoggy
Other side of the bike we've got a big turned cap cover that fits with a few grub screws into the thicker part of the ignition cover closer to the side of the min cases. It survived this off, but the cases died along with everything else.Thankfully the Tacho glass survived, these are really rare. This is a better photo, if anybody is interested, can probably get some made up. Edited August 26, 2015 by markfoggy forgot photo amongst text 3 Quote Link to comment
