Definitely flat and definitely did them without splitting the carbs. Was a while ago however have done it a couple of times.

Have you tried a thin ball ended Allen key / driver at varying slide heights? I definitely did mine in situ.

Sent you the scans of the factory manual carb section. Took mine completely to bits and then put back together just with that. More recently adjusted my needles too. All straightforward once you’ve read it. My bike runs very smoothly
