CafeDragsterEFE Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 Hello, I don´t have an oil cooler on my 1987 at the moment, cauyse it has been a race bike before. So, can I use other coolers but OEMS? Like GSX-R etc. They are easier to find up here. Cheers Jussi Quote
CockneyRick Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 Don't see why not, i have a OEM spare & i've also fitted an aftermarket one to mine. Although it hasn't run in anger yet! Quote
Gixer1460 Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 I wouldn't use a OEM GSXR cooler on an EFE - they are designed and sized for an oil cooled engine! Using one on an air cooler engine would probably ensure the oil NEVER reached operating temperature! Compare a pic of a GSXR cooler to Rick's above for comparison. A stock EFE oil cooler is even smaller ! ! ! 2 Quote
Joseph Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 Stock EFE indeed is literally the size of a postcard Quote
Dezza Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 My Harris efe has an Earls cooler a little larger than Rick's. As with all big aircooled fours it still gets mightily hot, especially in warm weather. I remember back when the big aircooled 1000 cc fours were raced in endurance, they often only used the top parts of the fairings due to cooling issues. Old pics of the Bol show this clearly. I don't know the difference in optimal oil temperatures for air v oil cooled engines though. Does anyone know this? I am not saying it is not so but in my experience of big air cooled fours over-cooling via fitting of too big an oil cooler is a new one to me. 1 Quote
CockneyRick Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 I did a full tour of Europe on a Z1000 & only had trouble once stuck in traffic outside Clermont. They don't like standing still for sure! 1 Quote
dago Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 A 10 row cooler is probably the best bet, I fitted a 13 row to mine and it took forever to get up to temp (gauge fitted), ended up having to fit a thermostat so it only went through cooler when it hit 70' 1 Quote
GSX1100dreamn Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 (edited) Best check which oil filter cover your running before fitting oil cooler. If the oil cooler has been removed it may have been replaced with an earlier style. Edited October 2, 2021 by GSX1100dreamn added info Quote
