Jinxy Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Does anyone know what a GSX1100EG is please? Been offered one but not had a chance to go see it yet and can't find any references to them on the web. Been told it's an 1135 air cooled lump so I'm assuming it's going to be along the lines of an EF/EFE. Quote
Captain Chaos Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 The 1135cc GSX1100 is officially called GSX1100E (naked), GSX1100ES (half faired) and GSX1100EF (fully faired). Added to one of these names is a letter E (1984), F (1985) or G (1986). So an 1100EG is a naked one from 1986.Everybody calls these bikes EFE but an EFE is actually a 1984 fully faired one. 2 Quote
Jonboy Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Pretty sure that is the last of the 1135 aircooled variants that looks like an EFE. Hate to say it, but Google it ! 1 Quote
Jinxy Posted November 10, 2015 Author Posted November 10, 2015 Thanks guys, first thing I did was turn to google and it had nothing as concise as the info from captain chaos or you. At least now I know what I'll be going to see. I guess the next silly question is, is there anything in particular to look out for on these. Please excuse the complete lack of knowledge, I've been playing with oil cooled GSXR 11's for the last 16 years and while I've loved the looks of the these big bruisers they were never really on my radar before. Captain Chaos Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 like on all old Suzuki's the electrical system is a bit weak, and another famous "EFE" problem is the frame rusting near the sidestand. 1 Quote
Jaydee Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Some of the subframes were prone to cracking, were they not? Quote
Jinxy Posted November 10, 2015 Author Posted November 10, 2015 Dodgy electrics aren't an issue, quite used to replacing 20+ yr old wiring and components. So just check the frame for corrosion and cracked subframes? Though I guess being a steel frame they're easy enough to get repaired? Thanks again guys, this site and it's members are an absolute godsend when it comes to stuff like this. Quote
Tony Nitrous Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 I've seen a couple of naked ones recently that didn't have the "big" headlight, and were wearing smaller Bandit / SV 7" ones. Personally I'd want the big light or use it as leverage in the deal if its missing. 3 Quote
minx Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Watch out for vultures If it's completely standard fork tubes are likely to be worn, give it a good bounce to see what the rear shock's like.... otherwise, as the guys say - electrics and have a good old poke about around the sidestand. Make sure you don't get swindled on the headlight - standard ones fetch good money and are often swapped out or sold separately. Also depends how much you are looking to spend. A rough standard bike on the road is always going to be worth a grand now. EFE engines will never go out of fashion as long as there is air and petrol. 1 Quote
Jinxy Posted November 10, 2015 Author Posted November 10, 2015 Apparently it's standard, runs and rides but it's a hound cosmetically....though that said it's nowhere near a grand either. So guess come the weekend I'll be picking up my winter ride and it can be taken apart and worked on once spring arrives and the GSXR comes out of hibernation . 1 Quote
Captain Chaos Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 whatever you do, post some pics on here. We like pics. 2 Quote
Screwriverracing Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Don't do it, it will be the worst bike you ever bought, pass the number on and I will get rid of it for you( please )Cheers SRR 1 Quote
Jinxy Posted November 14, 2015 Author Posted November 14, 2015 (edited) So when is an 1100EG not an 1100EG? Went to see this bike today expecting a scruffy as described bike, nope. It's an 1100 alright, but it's a 1982 X plated 1100 EZ (I think). Rear ends been cut down/shortened, has a god awful seat on it that fits where it touches, brakes are shot, suspension ditto, engine runs but has a nice case of the furrys.....and yet I'm still kinda tempted. Swiss Toni Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 Nowt wrong with an EZ! That's next on the list. If you don't fancy it, PM me the guys number? Quote
stockcar Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 EZ would be the earlier Katana style engined twin shock bike Quote
Captain Chaos Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 EZ means 1982. ED is almost the same, with electronic tacho among other mods, from 1983.[/anorak mode off] Quote
Jinxy Posted November 18, 2015 Author Posted November 18, 2015 Well so much for buying a cheap winter ride, what I've done is bought yet another fucking project.....yep, I bought it. Picking it up next week. The more I looked at he bloody thing the more potential I could see, gods help me. And for those that asked for pics there's one above, got a few more but need to resize them before I can post them. It's an American import 1982 1100 EZ first registered here in '92, comes complete with the wrong clocks and light, a Yamaha front brake master cylinder (not that that matters coz it's goosed and going straight in the bin). Needs a lot of tlc.....starting with removing the crap graphics and those bloody awful footpegs. Quote
Captain Chaos Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 well it has potential. I guess. Quote
Jinxy Posted November 18, 2015 Author Posted November 18, 2015 well it has potential. I guess. Is that the polite way of saying it looks like a pile of shite? Quote

Jinxy Posted November 18, 2015 Author Posted November 18, 2015 It isn't pretty, that's for sure. But it can be without too much work (I think). And if it comes to it I can break it for more than I've paid. Quote
