bigyellowthing Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 This happened, replaced end cap and now relay clicks repeatedly and battery gets hot. Starter spins until it is installed when relay clicks quickly but engine doesn't. Battery is fine, all connections tight Help... Any ideas? Quote
wraith Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 Try contacting the two terminals on the starter solenoid with a screwdriver and see if that turns the engine over? Ps ignition on but don't press the start button if it turns over your solenoid is f#ck. For something like that to happen to the starter motor as @Wee Man says see if the motor will turn over by hand from the 19mm but on the ATU, take plugs out as well when turning over by hand. 1 Quote
bigyellowthing Posted June 6, 2020 Author Posted June 6, 2020 Motor turns over on the crank end bolt. The starter spins without any load but turning the starter clutch gear is nigh on impossible with the relay clicking and battery getting hot. Quote
Gixer1460 Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 Does the starter clutch spin freely one way and not the other? Best take the starter clutch off as that is potentially where the problem is - although that wouldn't explain why battery is getting hot unless its internally shorting ! ! ! 1 Quote
wraith Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 (edited) I had a battery getting hot but that was the solenoid that was buggered and pulling loads of current and would not stop turning the starter motor, change the solenoid and all was good. Edited June 6, 2020 by wraith Quote
bigyellowthing Posted June 6, 2020 Author Posted June 6, 2020 Cheers guys. The battery isn't hot enough to melt but fluid has been spat out of the breather. Something I'd drawing loads of current. Is this what is making the solenoid click on and off rapidly? Battery showing plenty of volts. The starter clutch ring gear will move clockwise but not anti-clockwise (the way the starter spins). bigyellowthing Posted June 6, 2020 Author Posted June 6, 2020 And.. Which flywheel puller do I need? There seem to be several different ones. Thanks again for your help and advice Quote
wraith Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 If you have the standard rear wheel etc, the wheel spindle dose the job on GS/gsx Quote
jensvonbustenskjold Posted June 7, 2020 Posted June 7, 2020 Hows your starter brushes? Worn brushes might result in low torque. My starter did not turn over the engine. Changed brushes, and that solved it Quote
bigyellowthing Posted June 7, 2020 Author Posted June 7, 2020 Starter brushes are well within spec. Starter replaced in 2015 and bike done embarrassingly low mileage since.. Quote
dago Posted June 7, 2020 Posted June 7, 2020 Have you checked the starter button? Might be shorting make the solenoid click on & off , then change the solenoid as these are easiest and cheapest things to try gisrt Quote

bigyellowthing Posted June 7, 2020 Author Posted June 7, 2020 I'll measure the thread, standard wheels and suspension long gone... Quote
bigyellowthing Posted June 7, 2020 Author Posted June 7, 2020 The starter button ok as starter spins when not connected to the starter clutch. Quote
bigyellowthing Posted June 15, 2020 Author Posted June 15, 2020 As far as I can tell, starter end case broke, jammed starter, battery couldn't turn starter so battery crapped out. Replaced battery and starter end cap. Fixed Thanks for all your help. G Quote
