nick65 Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Hi chaps. I’m getting my engine aqua blasted and then want to paint it silver. Does anyone know the paint code for engines, or which paint gives best/closest match. Thanks Quote
Rustynail Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 If there is a code for the correct paint for the engine, I've never found it. Apparently smoothrite is a good enough paint to use but doesn't react very well to petrol. While i've been looking I was pointed in the direction of " Mipatherm" high temperature paint by @ral. I got mine from the bay of e. If you have a look at the topic GSX 1100 ET @ral there is a photo of the engine he has painted Looks good to me Quote
Mark28 Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 If it's being aqua blasted the finish should be really nice and fuel proof without painting it. Quote
PanzerWomble Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Simoniz wheel silver from Halfrauds was very popular and a good match back in the day . Quote
Swiss Toni Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 It's a bit of a waste of money vapour blasting it, just to paint it. Either clean and paint the engine, or get it vapour blasted, and leave it as it is! Quote
nick65 Posted March 20, 2019 Author Posted March 20, 2019 It’s beenbadly painted by someone previously, so I thought getting it vapour blasted would get all manky paint off prior to re painting, if I just left it after vapour blasting woul dthe finish not tarnish? Thanks Quote
Swiss Toni Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 No! Vapour Blasting cleans, then closes the pores in the alloy. It looks better than new if done properly. I used to bead blast my old Triumph/BSA/Norton cases. The finish looked ok, but easily picked up dirty finger marks, until I found out that using a soft brass brush in the electric drill gave a nice satin sheen, which also closed the pores against dirt. gs7_11 Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 Yeah, vapour won't take old paint off, you need something more aggressive. Soda? Your blaster will know. You leave a rougher finish for painting than vapour gives you. Just had mine done on my 1000S and have left it raw. R.D. Cox in Reading did my 7/11 20 years ago, great match to original and still in good condition. Quote
Rhubarb Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 Caustic soda doesn't work so well anymore I tried this with my wheels very recently and whilst it softens the paint a little and removes miniscule amounts it didn't actually work. Quote
ral Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 I might be wrong on this but I don’t recall the bottom case being painted on the thou, it wasn’t on my last one owned for 25 years with no known engine changes, finish over time yellowed slightly and appeared to be more of a clear coat finish on upper cases. gs7_11 Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 Correct, the bottom cases weren't painted. The top case, block and head were painted silver. Quote
