I don’t know what it is about 80s and 90s Suzukis that makes them so special, I only know that they are. As it turns out, many other people feel the same way.
From the 6th to the 8th of May Rob and Darin of Classic Bike Track Days delivered a very unique event at Donington Park. For the first time ever they combined 3 things:
- A bike show for club stands
- A full weekend of classic bike track days
- A 4 hour classic endurance race open to international race teams
Ambitious, yes. Inspired, definitely. Successful, absolutely! There was something for everyone. Club stands to peruse for the detail minded, track participation for the wannabes and real hardcore classic endurance racing for race fans.
Oldskoolsuzuki came in force. We had 14 bikes on track and another 20 bikes on our stand. Once again we punched above our weight with 2 of our project bikes winning best in show and 3 other project bikes on the stand winning rosettes. More accolades than any other club at the event, and we’re not even a club.
It was just an amazing weekend, we were surrounded by a fantastic array of machinery and even better company. It was great to see our bikes thrashing round the track and even better to see the real endurance racers doing it properly.
So 30 years on we’re still building them, modifying, tuning them, turbo charging them, riding them and generally obsessing over them. To me OSS is a pretty unique phenomenon and it’s bigger, broader and stronger than it ever has been.
I still don’t know why I love these bikes so much. I’m just glad I’m not the only one because you meet the nicest people around OSS bikes.
Now for some pictures, we like pictures. Thanks to everyone who shared their pictures with us. Special thanks to Dave Manning for some great track action shots.
