bigyellowthing Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Hi AllMy 1981 GSX 1100 has developed a misfire. No1 seems to be the culprit and possibly No4. Misfire is consistent and I suspect the coils.Original coilsNew plugsWiring cleaned and checkedAny help appreciated...Cheers Quote
dago Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 swap the coils round see if the misfire moves to 2 & 3 1 Quote
Sweary Bob Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Sounds like coil if misfire on 1 and 4, as Dago says swop coils to confirm. Quote
bigyellowthing Posted August 30, 2015 Author Posted August 30, 2015 Hi AllI have checked the coil as detailed in the manual. It seems that the coil feeding 2 & 3 is breaking down. There primary is reading 4ish but no reading when multi-meter connected to both plug caps. The other coil reads 4ish and 35ish between the plug caps. The misfire is consistent but there appears to be a weak spark at the plugs (earthed plug on head) is this enough to cause horrendous misfire? What does anyone think about replacement? E-bay standard, cheap Chinese or Dyna with Taylor leads?Any help appreciated Quote

jamie k Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Any coil with the same ratings will do also check you plug caps aswell and double check there isn't water lying around plug/ head , also change plugs around new ones can be faulty ( not common though ) once you have the problem eliminated totally it should be now though givin the coils resistance issues if money alows go for a named brand Chinese should be fine but you never know Suzuki are too dear for what They are Quote
Kristjan Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Always measure secondary windings with plug caps removed from the leads, they can be faulty too. Quote
bigyellowthing Posted August 31, 2015 Author Posted August 31, 2015 Cheers guys,What about Dyna coils and Taylor leads? Quote
bigyellowthing Posted September 5, 2015 Author Posted September 5, 2015 Bloody thing runs OK for a few minutes but then misses.Sparks seem OKCoils are originalPlugs are new.Should I just bin the coils and try replacement if so with what.I'm going off this bike. Quote
Captain Chaos Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 (edited) Long ago my GS1000 had the same problem. Runs fine for a bit, then no.1 started missing, quickly followed by no.4 and then it wouldn't run at all.Removed tank, check/clean carbs, repeat to infinity. Replaced all the ignition bits (incl. points) but it didn't help.Turned out the vacuum pipe to the fuel tap was leaking. After installing the tank I primed the carbs, then put the tap on "on" and it got out of fuel after a while. First cil. 1 was misfiring because of the air leak. Then no. 4 was misfiring because that was the first carb to run out of fuel on the sidestand. Edited September 5, 2015 by captain chaos Quote
bigyellowthing Posted September 6, 2015 Author Posted September 6, 2015 cheers Captain.I'll replace the pipe and give it a go....Still deeply suspicious of the coils... Quote
bigyellowthing Posted September 8, 2015 Author Posted September 8, 2015 A plug cap. Just one plug cap. Arse. Quote
bigyellowthing Posted September 19, 2015 Author Posted September 19, 2015 So now its got 07 Bandit coils and runs fine for about 10 minutes but then drops one cylinder, then two, then stalls out.Coils show equal figures on primary and secondary with a multimeter.Any ideas? At all? Quote
Screwriverracing Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 If it's not electrical, chances are it's fueling then.Cheers SRR Quote

E-bay standard, cheap Chinese or Dyna with Taylor leads?Any help appreciatedKawasaki coils work well on a GSX motor and are cheap and easy to obtain. I use some from a ZZR1100 (same as on many Kwaks) and they have the same spec as stock GSX. However, they have the added bonus of threaded retainers for the leads. Quote
bigyellowthing Posted October 10, 2015 Author Posted October 10, 2015 Seems it was a weird issue with the fuse box that was "a right bastard" to trace but all is now well! Thanks for your helpGlen Quote
