Reddragon Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 I got hold of a very cheap MK2 1200 bandit engine no info or knowledge about mileage, it looks like it's been used as a boat anchor but was only £50 so worth a shot, it turns over by hand, has compression, selects all gears and the cams have very little wear, so would you fire it up and see what happens or have a look inside just incase? fatblokeonbandit Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 ill give you £100 for it now and a tin of Lassie dog food Push the tit and see what happens 1 Quote
Reddragon Posted September 5, 2017 Author Posted September 5, 2017 Tempting offer Garry but I'll pass thanks , not got everything I need to fire it yet without cannibalising my chop but was just wondering Quote
Captain Chaos Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 yeah just fire it up. If it breaks, it would have needed opening up anyway so you have nothing to loose. 4 Quote
Reddragon Posted September 5, 2017 Author Posted September 5, 2017 You're absolutely right , hadn't thought about it like that , cheers fellas Quote
bruteforce Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Couldn't hurt to take the sump off? Most older bikes have some serious dirt in the strainer so if there's no metal in the pan it is still worth it to clean the strainer. If there's metal- you can still fire it up but.... Quote
Reddragon Posted September 6, 2017 Author Posted September 6, 2017 I've got a sump gasket kicking around so wouldn't hurt to have a look Quote
Reddragon Posted September 7, 2017 Author Posted September 7, 2017 Whipped the sump off today, spotless inside, nothing in the oil strainer and what little oil that was left in it looked good, no swarf, or metallic shimmer and as far as I could see with a torch everything looks in good shape Quote
Reddragon Posted September 7, 2017 Author Posted September 7, 2017 Forgot to attach this pic, doesn't really show up clearly but not a spec in the strainer 1 Quote
nlovien Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 plugs oot, cam cover off - liberal wet around the cams buckets with fresh oil and spin her until you see a good supply to the head - got good flow and no obviously nasty sounding things going on - fire her up oh, and check the engine no. yi don't want to be spending time on it if it ain't legit - not suggesting it ain't, just a good precaution Quote
Reddragon Posted September 7, 2017 Author Posted September 7, 2017 When you say check the engine number, it's not been ground off if that's what you mean Quote
nlovien Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 thats the 1st, then look closely and see if there are any signs that the no. has been tampered with - ideally if you have a similar engine you compare the stamping type best is if you can get the bike reg. from the seller = plenty online sights that will then confirm the no. - TBH tactfully approaching the seller about its history / response will give you a good gut feel otherwise I don't know how to get it checked with just the engine no. other than amending a V5 and sending it to DVLC - if it comes back yir good - if ti doesn't - dunno, could open a can of worms - but contact DVLA and they may advise you'll gather i've previously been caught out - spending a lot of time and money on a project bike - it did have appropriate documents but it was a ringer, one tiny bit of "not right" on the chassis no. = I went to the police to get it checked and lost the lot - lesson learned on a few accounts anyway, bloomin good bargain Quote
Reddragon Posted September 8, 2017 Author Posted September 8, 2017 It was bought from a customs auction as a lost parcel, presumably they wouldn't sell it on if it was stolen Quote
Reddragon Posted September 8, 2017 Author Posted September 8, 2017 Well when I say £50, it was actually £51 and £40 for it to be palleted up and delivered Quote

Reddragon Posted September 9, 2017 Author Posted September 9, 2017 It begins with e and ends with bay , there's a guy on there who does the whole storage wars type thing and buys up lots of unclaimed customs stuff Quote
Reddragon Posted September 11, 2017 Author Posted September 11, 2017 Sometimes I hate bike building, found a couple of snapped exhaust studs while I was looking over the engine and thought, i'll drill them out before I put it in the frame , all went well, no snapped drill bits so I thought I'll put it in the frame, it'll only take half an hour , that's where I should've packed up and left it, laid the engine on its side on a couple of blocks, got the frame over it and it got stuck, a little wiggle will sort that, nope, bit more of a wiggle, nope shake the fuck out of it nope !!! Admittedly I still had the forks and swinger plus wheels in place but I've done it several times before on a couple of B6 and a couple Kwak motors but this one was having non of it Soooooooooo the red mist came down, I flipped the frame across the patio, the engine fell out breaking a couple fins, then I picked up the engine and threw it into the shed where it landed on my trolley jack and may have cracked the cases, but at the moment I really couldn't give 2 shits if I have Quote
Swirl Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 Oooppppsss you need to go down the pub and make some big friends, makes engine removals and fitting much easier 1 Quote
Reddragon Posted September 11, 2017 Author Posted September 11, 2017 Lol I work nights and although that gives me all day to do what I want there's never anyone around to lend a hand coz they're all at work , so I've learnt to do things on my own, just lost my rag with this one Quote
