boilerdude Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 I bought this bike somewhat cheap and apparently needing a new cct. Well I replaced that and of course I should have known thats not what the noise was. it's still there. at low idle. something rattles and one cylinder misses. choke to get the bike started a little higher rpms and the noise goes away though. And when I test rode the bike it fired on all 4 after 4 or 5k or so. But at regular idle there is some kinda knuckley rattley sound. And I dont think it's the cam chain at all. The tensioner I took out worked fine and the bandit one I put in also. I guess just wish me luck for now. Any pointers before I get started. Should I need the suzuki valve tool or no? Quote
Gixer1460 Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 If it had dropped a valve it'll run like crap and deffo won't run on 4. Big ends or main bearings possibly? If they've had it then symptomatic of bad oil pressure some time and cams may be fubar'd as well? Until you strip some down you won't know if you need special tools - normal spring compressor usually ok. Quote
boilerdude Posted June 14, 2016 Author Posted June 14, 2016 Goddammit. You ever wish you could just go back in time and warn yourself to do or not to do something. Quote
Sheep Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 Have you checked the oil for debris etc?....Would a stephoscope, homemade or otherwise, help locate the noise better??....just throwing ideas out there Quote
boilerdude Posted June 14, 2016 Author Posted June 14, 2016 I thought it sounded more like a head noise off hand. What I'll probably end up doing is swapping a bandit motor in there while I build this one for my bandit. Quote
teltwosheds Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 If you want to check inside the head. Lidle are doing those mechanics cameras with the probes etc, for 30 some thing quid Quote
Katana Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 first of all check it isnt just clutch rattle if it goes when revs pick up. put a long scewdriver to your ear (blunt end)then touch it on various parts of engine when running to get a idea where rattle is coming from 2 Quote
canamant Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 Do a compression test. IF compression is OK and if it runs OK after 4 - 5k check the mixture screws under the carbs. I had the same symptoms on Slabby Racer 1 one day. Turned out someone had turned the outer carb's screw right in. Quote
tabby59 Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 Have you even taken the valve cover off to see what is going on in there? It could just be loose valve clearances, maybe a cam lobe gone to crap, and yeah, you can see if the springs are up to snuff. Quote
GsxrCol Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 I would set all valve clearances and then balance the carbs, these can run shit at low revs if the carbs are out and the slides make all sorts of weird noises. 2 Quote
Nelson Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 What GSXRCol said Dude. My Slabbie was running rough at tick-over & No. 4 pipe was a lot cooler to touch, (spit test). It sounds like your running issues. Tried all sorts, it was driving me mad. Went back to basics, checked the valves, then balanced it, No, 4 was miles out. As I adjusted the carbs in, you could hear it was right. Don't know about the noise though, good luck 1 Quote
boilerdude Posted July 17, 2016 Author Posted July 17, 2016 I recently landed a new job for now and I havent really had time/energy for it as of yet. Saving up money for somebody to "help" me with this or sell it and move on. Ive been wondering how much I would have into shipping (from US) one of my bikes directly to dave dunlop and having him work the whole thing over... Quote
rustychain Posted July 30, 2016 Posted July 30, 2016 clutch basket springs went on mine sounded like a bag of spanners Quote

Depending where you are in the states, talk to Chris at MotoGPWerks - He's in Anaheim i think. Quote
Dezza Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 When the bike had a knackered cam chain tensioner, was it gone so much as the chain was very slack? If so, the chain may have jumped a tooth and put the cam timing out. Just a thought. Quote
