smirk Posted October 1, 2022 Posted October 1, 2022 Evening. It's been bleeding years since I've been here! But hello again! Just starting a new winter project on an 81 gsx1100. I don't want much - better forks - braking & tyre choice. I'm looking at 12oo bandit front end & 600 bandit rear as I don't want chain run issues. Being a lazy sod & a dinosaur, anyone done the same & can give me advice & a shopping & machining list... it would be much appreciated. I want to keep it close to original looking & low cost as I'm out of bike building fund this year! Cheers in advance. 1 Quote
wraith Posted October 1, 2022 Posted October 1, 2022 Welcome back. @TonyGeeover to you on this one Stem change on the b12 yoke. 1 Quote
TonyGee Posted October 1, 2022 Posted October 1, 2022 as wraith said a stem change on the yokes, if you use a B6 rear wheel you will have to machine the sprocket carrier down some, but you will have to offset the front sprocket a bit to get the chain straight. what swinger will you use ? you will have to change the calliper hanger and possibly the calliper as well. 1 Quote
smirk Posted October 1, 2022 Author Posted October 1, 2022 Cheers for that. Rear swinger? I have no idea yet.. bandit 6 or 12 with shock lugs welded on.? Or is there a simpler (cheaper) option? Also is the stem swap a simple press out press in? Or is it a bush to be made? Quote
TonyGee Posted October 1, 2022 Posted October 1, 2022 saying that I put a B12 wheel (and swinger) in my GSX1100 ET, my chain runs close to the frame and the edge of the tyre and even when the chain is slack i haven't had any contact with the tyre or frame. 2 Quote

smirk Posted October 2, 2022 Author Posted October 2, 2022 That's great... I wanted to use the original swinger if possible with a 600 wheel. Other than spacing is there ant great issues with fitting the bandit rear calliper etc? Many thanks. Quote

Many thanks. if you are using the OEM swinger then you will only get the B6 wheel in with a 150 tyre, the B12 wheel/tyre is too wide. you will need to use a bandit calliper hanger so it matches the bandit disc, but because the torque arm is on top you will need a GS 500 calliper as they are top mounted. 2 Quote
wraith Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 The gsx600/750f calipers will work as well as the gs500. Got a gsx600f on on my gsx1157et project bike 1 Quote
smirk Posted October 3, 2022 Author Posted October 3, 2022 Thanks all. Engine/ carbs needs a bit of loving first as she's a but erratic. But in the meantime I'm gathering bits for some subtle handling & more importantly braking mods. Quote
Chay Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 I have a b12 wheel with a 170 tyre in the standard et swinger Used the gsx sprocket carrier and 10mm offset sprocket 18/48 530 . Gsxr1100 m torque arm mounted to the centre stand mount Quote

I run a 170 on a 600 SRAD wheel in the stock arm - with a 170 tyre......its piggin' close with a new chain , but OK once its done a few hundred miles Quote

Chay Posted October 15, 2022 Posted October 15, 2022 Stock arm is good.bandit 12 arms can foul on the brake spring mount if you use off the shelf top hats and are running standard foot pegs etc Quote

smirk Posted October 15, 2022 Author Posted October 15, 2022 Think my minds made up for next year... standard arm b600 wheel machined down carrier to suit chain run & a b12 front. Hopefully that will bring it out of the stone age a bit. Quote
wraith Posted October 15, 2022 Posted October 15, 2022 @Hardassfunk has just put a set of gsx650f wheels up in the for sale section Quote
Chay Posted October 15, 2022 Posted October 15, 2022 I'd go for 10 mm offset front sprocket Will allow you to upgrade to b12 wheel an 170 tyre without notching frame Quote
smirk Posted October 15, 2022 Author Posted October 15, 2022 Tbh... a 150 rear will do me fine. I'm only looking for better tyre choice & stickiness and better braking. The wife saw it when I brought it home & declared its to pretty to fully butcher. And I have to many other bikes. 1 Quote

Tom Posted September 7 Posted September 7 I’m doing something similar, does anyone know exactly how much to machine off the b6 sprocket carrier, if using a 10mm offset sprocket? It’s a mk2 b6 rear rim in the stock swinger? I wasn’t sure the carrier would fit in my lathe now I’ve set it up carefully in 4 jaw chuck, which will work, but not done the measurements. Silly me can anyone help? Thanks Tom Quote

Thanks Tom are you talking about a GSX1100 ? if so my latest GSX11 has a B6 rear wheel and stock GSX swinger, front sprocket is 10mm offset, but the rear sprocket carrier is off a GSX600F which is slightly slimmer than a B6 one. i had 10mm taken off it to get the chain in line but my guess with a B6 carrier it will be "about" 15mm, thats not an exact measurement but will put you in the ball park. Tom Posted September 9 Posted September 9 Thank you! I took a chance and took exactly 10mm off it to be conservative, it’s in there now and it looks to me like it will need maybe 2 or 3 mm more off it to work with a 10mm offset sprocket. And I discovered the GSX 1100 bolts are exactly the right length!! Cheers! Tom Quote
