Reelinfeele Posted November 18, 2016 Share Posted November 18, 2016 Hey all. got the 1100 running good since rebuild. the question I have is how hot is too hot for the engine temp. I am running a Lockhart oil cooler with the appropriate mods room an add on oil cooler. 1170 wiseco kit now, temp gauge hits right around 240 f. of course it comes down a bit when at speed. but rises quickly in traffic. I am not really sure what it should be. I am using Maxima 10w40 convenational oil. what is normal for these engines? I live in Florida, USA and our summers are extremely hot. just now getting into riding season here and I don't want to cook my new motor. Cheers Quote Link to comment

Arttu Posted November 19, 2016 Share Posted November 19, 2016 Well, I would say that 240F (115C) is slightly on warm side but nothing alarming and even quite normal in slow traffic and warm weather. Normal operating range is something like 175-210F (80-100C) but usually it will get higher in slow traffic. You need some air flow to cool the engine no matter how big cooler you have. So only way to prevent temp rise when moving slowly would be an electric fan... Quote Link to comment

Ditto - if the cooler is 'round the back' it won't cool jack! The GS1150 motors are less 'aircooled' compared to the GS1100 hence the addition of the cooler at the front. Quote Link to comment

Reelinfeele Posted November 19, 2016 Author Share Posted November 19, 2016 I am using the stock oul cooler ports. I made a plug to block the passage to the filter. I did install a crankcase breather at clutch cover. motor is fresh , maybe it will get better. just not going to worry about it then. just keep my eye on it. 1 Quote Link to comment

johnr Posted November 20, 2016 Share Posted November 20, 2016 drill a small hole, say 2mm wide through the centre of the plug you put in behind the filter cover, or, get an efe cover. if the pipes are kinked or flattened in any way you will have zero oil flow and will fook your top end in pdq, a small bypass allows some flow of oil to bypass the cooler. the efe covers have a casting inside to restrict the oil flow that does the same job as your blanking plug, but even that has a small gap in it to allow circulation of oil if the cooler ever gets clogged. The plug I made has a hole. I did find that info on here somewhere. Flow seems ok, cooler gets warm and oil seems good to head. 1 Quote Link to comment
