Hilko Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 Just noticed oil is weeping from the rocker cover gasket all around the front half or so. I have bought a replacement (Athena)available from wemoto but it doesn’t come with the 4 sealing washers I vaguely remember from the last time I fit ted a new gasket and which are also mentioned in the Haynes manual. Are these strictly necessary and if so what size and material are they? I haven’t taken the cover off yet so just wanted to have everything needed together to do the job quickly. Quote
Hilko Posted May 16, 2023 Author Posted May 16, 2023 Hopefully that is my question answered. Four of the holes are bigger than the others and I thought I remembered some seals for these ? I am getting on a bit so maybe not Quote
imago Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 Do you mean the two locating dowels in the rocker cover? They don't have seals, just larger holes in the gasket. Or the four half moon rubbers at the end of the cams? They need to be ordered separately to the gasket. Quote
Hilko Posted May 16, 2023 Author Posted May 16, 2023 I forgot about the half moon rubbers. Can’t they be reused with a bit too f silicon if they haven’t totally hardened? The gasket I received has 4 holes larger than the rest, presumably for the locating dowels which if there are only 2 might suggest the gasket is usable either way round but it doesn’t look exactly the same either side. imago Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 I think that may just be a slightly different way of making the same thing. If you Google image search for a Cometic rocker cover gasket you'll see that instead of those four large holes there's just a thin strip round the outside. The other difference you'll notice is Cometic use a little joint strip of material to keep the inner pieces in line. Just different manufacturer's ways to acheive the same outcome. Personally I'd replace the half moons unless they were recently fitted as I'd hate to have to pull it down again if they did leak. Quote
Hilko Posted May 16, 2023 Author Posted May 16, 2023 Thanks for that. I think the gasket on the bike must be the cometic type, as it is as you describe. Any idea where I can get the rubbers? Quote
imago Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 Robinsons Suzuki, CMSNL, Eblag, probably quite a few other places too. Quote

For the K@w@ Z900 they have aluminium aftermarket ones, i have never seen them for Suzuki. Had some made for my GS1000 years ago, with a small lip on the inside to prevent them being pushed out. Alas, the guy that made them stopped his business .. Edited May 16, 2023 by Rijko 1 Quote
Hilko Posted May 16, 2023 Author Posted May 16, 2023 Cmsnl prices are ridiculous for everything. I’ll try one of the others. Cheers. Quote
Hilko Posted May 16, 2023 Author Posted May 16, 2023 What is the actual name of the half moon rubbers as I get f all when I search? Quote
johnr Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 Might be a bit late to mention it, but remember there are two different cam cover gaskets, 20 bolt and 24 bolt. Plus, are you sure your oil leak isn't failed o rings on the centre cylinder head bolts? 1 Quote
Hilko Posted May 9 Author Posted May 9 I was out of commission for a while so didn’t update. The gasket fitted fine and I reused the half moon rubbers with a bit of black silicon-just in case. Just over 1000 miles done since and all good. Thanks to all for the info. Quote
