Viensal Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 Hi, I am a new and proud owner of a 81 GS 750E, and I have a question regarding the dashboard; 1-Speedometer needdle is bouncing, is it common, any fix ? 2-Tachy is also quite vague, idle steady and seem to be fine, but anything over 3000 rpm seems to be vague and floating, again, is it common, any fix ? Thanks ! Alex Quote
imago Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 Usually dry or kinked cables. The most common 'fix' is to remove them and squirt some oil down one end while you spin them from the other. Quote
Blubber Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 Hi and welcome to OSS. My first guess would also be the cables. Original or slinky glide replacements are rhe next step if lube does not improve the behaviour Quote
wraith Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 Welcome to OSS Speedo as above but also sometimes the small tags on the front wheel Speedo drive/wheel get worn or bent with heavy handed wheel fitting. Quote
Viensal Posted July 21, 2020 Author Posted July 21, 2020 Thanks for the welcomes, I just realized that the RPM is also by cable so I lube up both, we will see the results next ride. Other than that It is really fun to ride, I was expecting a noodle chassis but it is quite stiff for an old one. Alex Quote
Swiss Toni Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 Don’t over lubricate the cable! Too much, and it’ll work it’s way up the cable and into the head. New instrument then required! 1 Quote
Dezza Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 Remove cable inner, clean, then re-lube using grease not oil. Leave the top 10cm grease free or it will work its way up into the clock and bugger it up, as ST says above (Motorcycle Mechanics Fortnightly, 1980 or thereabouts....). Quote
Swiss Toni Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 Nah! My first bike was a Spragthorpe Wappet! Quote
