Duckndive Posted April 4, 2020 Posted April 4, 2020 (edited) can you not swop the input shaft or gearbox for one from a long stroke ? Edited April 4, 2020 by Duckndive Quote

Not sure on that yet... it may be an option. It also may be an option to bore the exising shaft - I'm sure I read on here it has been done. I've spoken to my machinist friend and he's done similar before, just not on MC parts. I need to find out some specs of the hollow shaft (hole size etc.) and if they are just case or through hardened first. Perhaps someone on here can advise if a swap is possible? Quote

60Greyhound Posted April 4, 2020 Author Posted April 4, 2020 @DuckndiveI've had a look through and can't find anyrhing regarding swapping shafts between bikes... only how to swap the entire cluster into another bike, and in this case it points out that the shaft would need drilling! I think my motor is actually a '90 - R716 code? Quote
Captain Chaos Posted April 4, 2020 Posted April 4, 2020 it has the nipple on the clutch cover so yes it's a longstroke ('90 to '92) Slingshot. Valve adjusting by screw & locknut: '90. By shim: '91 or '92. Quote
60Greyhound Posted April 4, 2020 Author Posted April 4, 2020 I'll have to pull the rocker cover when I get the motor out to confirm just what year it is then... I bought it as an '89! Quote
Captain Chaos Posted April 5, 2020 Posted April 5, 2020 my '91 engine also has R716 code. 748cc is '88 - '89, 749cc is '90 - '92. Displacement is writen on the left side of the barrels. Quote
60Greyhound Posted April 5, 2020 Author Posted April 5, 2020 ok... 749 on the barrel, that puts it as 90-92, will pull the cover at some point to check if it is shims or screw adjustments on the valve clearances! Quote
dupersunc Posted April 5, 2020 Posted April 5, 2020 Neither long or short stroke 750s had a gearbox with a hole in the shaft for the clutch. I the the bandit 600 was the only 6speed box that did. The 750 shafts are easy enough to drill on a lathe. 12mm diameter hole from memory. Quote
60Greyhound Posted April 5, 2020 Author Posted April 5, 2020 @dupersuncperfect, thanks for that... much bigger hole that I was expecting too! Quote

Dezza Posted April 5, 2020 Posted April 5, 2020 Presumably, all bikes regardless of CC that have the clutch operating mechanism on the sprocket cover must have a hole through the gearbox shaft for the clutch pushrod. Quote

Captain Chaos Posted April 5, 2020 Posted April 5, 2020 actually ALL the oilcooled inline 4s have the clutch operation on the sprocket cover, except the Slingy 750s. Quote
60Greyhound Posted April 5, 2020 Author Posted April 5, 2020 (edited) so... are any of the clutch shafts a direct swap for my motor?? I'm starting to think it may be a '91 Reading up on the BST38 carbs it has, they are the 'small hole' type, it says in a thread that the '90 had large drain screws so you could change the jets without dropping the bowls out - mine only has small drains (although I might try and find a set of large hole ones). That's presuming of course they are the original carbs for the engine! When I pull it out to get the frame finished I'll take the rocker cover off and check how the valves are adjusted to be sure!
