  1. Not so keen to try stripping a largely non rebuildable turbo just to try and make it look a bit cleaner. Rather just leave it in one piece and fully functional
  2. Not at all really. Ball bearing turbo spins up that quick the intercooler doesnt affect it. Also has the added bonus of pretty much doubling the capacity of the plenum. Seems to help keep boost up between gear changes. My plenum due to space is fairly small.
  3. Thanks :-) I got the head really cheap so thought it was worth trying, Im not really struggling for power but my thinking is a better flowing engine will help take some load off the turbo making it pickup faster and be more reliable, not that its been unreliable so far. Wish i could do somthing about the housing, just not worth it for how quickly it goes rusty again. Just keep the rest shiny to distract attention from it
  4. Frame and engine re-united, should go back together pretty quickly now
  5. Course it is needed. Use all of mine everytime i go out. No fun otherwise
  6. Standard Rods have been good for 280bhp for me for 3 years. Thats on an abused 45k miles bottom end
  7. https://www.scoobynet.com/general-technical-10/945355-ihi-vf-turbo-specs.html https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1039161 Handy info
  8. Theres a quite handy guide on them all that floats about the subaru tuners pages. List them all with description and what sort of power the make and how they perform
  9. Stock timing, stock ignition curve (run an ignitech fully programable cdi, i did initially take 1 degree out of the ignition above 9500rpm to be safe but put it back after it proved safe) Fueling is stock bandit 12 carbs with 130 main jets (still with plastic carb tops) and 2psi base pressure, running on optimax pump fuel. Ran on dyno at 15psi when it made 200lbs ft and 278 bhp. Will see if i can dig out graph. I have it running slightly rich all the way through the range beacause cant get the same airflow on the dyno as on the road. Plugs are perfect colour. Made 25bhp difference putting 30mph of airflow from dyno fans straigh through intercooler. I have run 17psi with no problems on the road Nothing special about my setup really.
  10. VF22 is the one you really want for big power. Td04 are whats fitted to most imprezzas, the vf range are fitted to the upper end variants. I think vf23 like I have was on the 22b's Has been a few on Eblag recently relatively cheap. I think as well the later model imprezzas used a vf34 whick is very similar performance wise to vf23
  11. 2mm mate. I measured the rods and although 2mm longer I measured 1mm difference between top of botton shell to bottom of top hole. If that makes sense. Effectively means rod is only 1mm longer than bandit one. But my head appears to have been skimmed so went for 2mm to keep it safe. I will cc it all up properly to make sure but i only really put the rods in for reliability, not planning on running any more boost than before.
  12. More progress, frame is looking much more shiney after a good coue of hours with the autosol. Its not show quality but it aint no show bike. Once the last few engine gaskets turn up will button it up and get the motor back in the frame.
  13. I get you. Not worth caring about when its only 2mm tho lol.
  14. Length of rods does nothing to piston speed at all! Just alters its start and end position. Only thing that can change poston speed is the stroke changing.
  15. Theres many a sweet tin hiding around my garage. Ive got a bit of a sweet tooth :-)
  16. Got my tank laquered and few stickers added, im really happy with it. Giving the frame a bit of tlc and a good polish. Picked up my freshly serviced and resprung shock. Will all start going back together shortly
  17. Engine building has been happening. New motor should make a big difference, ports are way bigger and smoother than stock. Busa rods should help let it take a few more psi should it be needed too
  18. Will measure them when i remember to take my vernier into garage. ;-)
  19. Im going. You going Kev? Guess you have to seeing as your bikes on the poster :-)
  20. I had an imprezza TD04 to start with on 1216 with busa pistons Was a good turbo for the road, limit of around 250bhp before it was struggling. Nice and useable and picked up from around 3000rpm. Got a IHI VF23 off an imprezza now. What a difference, spools up from same low rpm, but does it much quicker. Makes 200ft lbs of torque at 6k and 280bhp at 15psi without the bike breaking a sweat. Goint to push it a bit harder this year now ive got a stronger motor, dont think im going to struggle to get 300+ bhp. I use the bike on road and track, power delivery is really smooth Good thing about the subaru turbos is they are dead easy to swap one for another
  21. I could definately use some. My bike does tend to go through em really quickly
  22. Yes mate, picking it up tomorrow. Looks like hes done an amazing job
  23. The bike is pretty small, im not that big. (Am trying to loose couple of stone though lol) Well happy with my t-shirt
