KATANAMANGLER Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 Hello, as above I'm planning to use a set of green dyna coils I have for the slabby. I've used the airbox space under the tank for my battery and the standard mountig configuration behing the headstock looks like it will foul the bottom of the tank. I'm looking for pictures of alternative orientation and mounting configuration in and around the original position, that doesn't foul the tank. Came across these brackets on Google which I assume allow the coils to be tightly grouped side by side behind the headstock but I couldn't find any pics of them in use. Anybody got any tried and tested suggestions? Quote
KATANAMANGLER Posted January 27, 2018 Author Posted January 27, 2018 That's an option but the RS carbs are taller. Quote
Guest YoshiJohnny Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 The original GSXR (XR41) had them mounted on the frame... headstock downtube https://i.pinimg.com/236x/e9/b8/9a/e9b89a5acaeb4eebad16a28db6b08c05.jpg Quote
Sheep Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 Do those dotted lines refer to bend lines?..for welding to frame perhaps? Quote
downtheshed Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 One of mine has the same as Cockney Ricks, 1 Quote
banoffee Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Mine has a modified tank instead. Was always going to remove the fuel level sender (bike is JDM with 3-clock dash originally) so did the necessary coil clearance at the same time. I wasn’t sure about airbox or no airbox at the time so that was how I went to allow both options. In hindsight now that it runs really well after much carb fettling so definitely no airbox, I’d probably do it differently so no tank mod was required. It would then be easier to fit another tank later etc. Mind you, I did use the airbox space for something else in the end . One of these days I should make some brackets to lose those cable ties though. 1 Quote
CockneyRick Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Depending on space above battery, you could put spacers to lift plate so the coils can fit agains't frame rails at highest poss position. Then it shouldn't foul carb tops 1 Quote
KATANAMANGLER Posted January 28, 2018 Author Posted January 28, 2018 I shall do some investigation by mocking up in various positions. Thanks for the replies and pictures chaps. Quote
KATANAMANGLER Posted January 28, 2018 Author Posted January 28, 2018 In the interests of making this thread more complete, I found a couple of alternatives that retain the original proximity to the headstock. 1 Quote
KATANAMANGLER Posted January 28, 2018 Author Posted January 28, 2018 Of course the correct answer is: Don't be such a tight-wad and buy a set of dyna mini coils Quote
Guest YoshiJohnny Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 you can only use the mini coils with specific ignition set ups though I believe... Quote
CockneyRick Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 As much as the original mounting place is near engine, i would guess as far away fom heat would be more ideal too! Quote
KATANAMANGLER Posted January 28, 2018 Author Posted January 28, 2018 That's true but we know they still work because that is where they originally sat. This is another tight-wad statement but if I keep them up front I don't have to shell out for new taylor leads The ones that are on are cut to length to be be positioned up front. Quote
E T Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 This is how I did mine just need 4 little brackets,I offset left hand ones to use outer holes so that mounting bolts are further away from coil terminals 2 Quote
KATANAMANGLER Posted January 28, 2018 Author Posted January 28, 2018 I mocked up a couple of brackets out of some aluminium plate and I have been able to mount them vertically side by side. They clear the tank and clear the rocker. Unfortunately the only sheet I had left had a few holes in the wrong places. These drawings must be for the 750 BTW because the centres where in the wrong places for my 11 frame. 1 Quote
vizman Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 MotOmangler.inc branching out from exhaust hangers.....i'd love to be a scrap man in your neck of the woods 1 Quote
KATANAMANGLER Posted January 28, 2018 Author Posted January 28, 2018 Actually the exhaust hanger prototype bin yielded the material for this job. Around my neck of the woods you are known as the scrap man. I guess they don't look beyond the aesthetic of your work when they call you that. So shallow... I think you're a genius. 1 Quote
wsn03 Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 I have one in headstock and one above carbs in a place that does not mess up access to balancing screws. I'll put up.pics on the weekend. I too made brackets Quote
wsn03 Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 (edited) My coils are mounted above the carbs, and 1. in the original coil mounting near the head stock. Picture 1 shows the bracket made to mount the coil above the carb - this bracket was made of cheese, so later I made a stainless one that didn't tear under vibration.. Picture 2 shows the coil above the carb (I don''t have flatslide carbs on mine, not sure what height difference there is between them and the CVs I use) Picture 3 shows the mounting point for my above carb coil - I shared it with the point used by the right hand bracket that holds the airbox in place Picture 4 shows the coil mounted in the headstock area using 2 of the original mounting points with a bracket made up on each side. zedhead Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 A mate of mine fitted green Dynas to his 750 Slabby in the standard position, which was all fine and dandy until the interference fit with the underside of the tank rattled and cracked one of the HT lead towers, after which the bike started misfiring under load... this was the coil arcing out on the base of the tank, which was slowly spark-eroding its way through the steel... It was only when he took it to Specials in Stoke (actually, I took it for him) when Stuart saw the knackered coil and repaired it with epoxy... his quote was "That bike was a time bomb..." 3 Quote
