Rsvfletch Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 Any advice on starter motor upgrades for GS1000's? Quote
Simbec1863 Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 I know you can get an upgraded starter motor for the 1100 ET so assume it would fit the gs to, not tried it yet but am considering one for mine as the original one is on its last legs. They are on Eblag for around £225 think this must be a cheaper and a better option than OEM if they are still available 1 Quote
melkweg Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 If you fit an uprated starter you may find your starter clutch will destroy itself even faster than normal. Not over engineered from my experience. Quote
Fjbj40 Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 Why do you need an upgraded starter? Higher compression? Quote
Rsvfletch Posted May 20, 2017 Author Posted May 20, 2017 Yes it's a slightly higher compression motor and the starter motor has destroyed it's self inside. New brushes won't cure this one!! i used Gurls blouse starter motors on my GPz years ago as they were better and I wondered if something similar would fit? Quote
Fjbj40 Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 My 1000 is 10.5:1 and the starter works just fine. I have however put an ignition retard arm on the plate to manually retard the timing during starting, since this mod I get zero starter kickback and the bike starts with ease. 1 Quote
wraith Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 I've have a lot of big bore GS1000 (1085,1100 and 1148cc) all hi comp and not had problems with the starters, starter clutch yes but not the starter. If you get a standard starter, make shore the brushes are good and check the small bearings are in good condition and you should be OK. 1 Quote
Reinhoud Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 when I had a 1085 big bore high comp on my one, the starter was struggling too... 1 Quote
neil w Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 On my Katana the starter was fine until I rebuilt the motor with an 1166 kit and then it struggled . it eventually packed in (the magnets separated from the casing) so I picked up a used one from E Bay, it was very little better until I replaced the battery with an AGM one and then the cranking speed was much quicker and no problems 1 Quote
CockneyRick Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 My 1085 also struggles. I prob need new brushes but they looked ok to my shit eyes! Quote
wraith Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 Don't forget they are other 30 years old now, and we are all filling abit slower 1 Quote
Fjbj40 Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 Best advice I can give if they are struggling to start is retard the ignition. Most high compression engines require this, most electronic controlled engines utilize this to ease in starting. Firing the plugs at or very near TDC will allow the engine to spin faster on start easing the load on the starter. Not only will it make life easy on the starter it will make life on the starter clutch soooo much better. A destroyed starter clutch is a lot more painful than a destroyed starter! CockneyRick Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 (edited) You can make me one @Rsvfletch when you do yours Edited May 22, 2017 by CockneyRick change Quote
melkweg Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 Tr1umph had a spate of problems with brand new starter clutches grenading. It was caused by the engine spinning over too slow when starting and therefore causing the ignition to be advanced, and the engine to kick back. The problem was with the igniter not the starter clutch itself. Replaced under warranty with modified part (sometimes). Don't know how you would reliably check aftermarket ignitions to see if they retard ignition effectively at cranking speed though. 1 Quote
