4.5 17" wheel (gsxr 750 1988) on gsx750 1981.

Hi!

I wonder if someone nows how much space i need to adjust for the 4.5 17" wheel to the GSX750e 1981?

Need lees distans space. Its litle tricky to messure the exact length outside to outside on the wheels and now how much i need to adjust to make it work = )

I feels tight, especially with the big axel to the brake caliper.

Anyone done this? = )

Thanks!

if you still have the steel (round) swingarm on it then you will get a bandit 600 wheel in with a 150 tyre, you can fit the GSX1100 ally swinger in and have room for the same wheel but with a 160 tyre.  you will need an offset front sprocket as well.  as for the rear brake then use a GS500 calliper and a B600/1200 hanger.  the sprocket carrier will need to be machined down a bit to help with chain alignment, theirs enough room for the 630 chain but better to convert to 530 chain and sprockets.

if thats a 160 tyre in your pic then looks like you have enough room,  not all 150 or 160 tyres measure the same width at the widest point !!!  depends on the make/model of tyre.

About the ”thesprocket carrier will need to be machined down a bit”

please explaine more. Are you talking about the wheel side for the back spricket, that side needs to take away some material? How much?  Do you need to make new holes for the screws after?

see image please:

You mean the peace to the rim (white arrow)?

You’ll need to machine down the the sprocket carrier face where the sprocket bolts on. This will need to be done on a lathe so it’s 100% straight. The one in the picture is from a Busa but you get the idea. The holes won’t change. You’ll have to work out how much you need to take off yourself as it will depend on the individual parts you have used. If you take a lot off (5mm or more) you may want to cut the bolts down as they will poke through further.

About the offset front sprocket, what size? And is it 16 or 17 i need? Any link to that sprocket? :)

Depends on the gearing you want to use. I prefer a 17 on the front as you get a bit more clearance on over the swing arm pivot. I have a 5/8ths offset but 3/8ths may be enough for you. I ended up getting mine sent from Japan but SPS have them also.

I went for the 18T only because the seller recommended it but that is on my 1100.  and as my 1100 is only using a 160 rear a 3/8ths offset was enough. :tu

Don't know if you are using the gsx sprocket carrier in the 17 inch wheel but this helps with the offset

it does help, but they won't fit a bandit 600 wheel, but fits a B12.  not tried a GSXR wheel but i guess they fit ?

Now I’ve said that I’m not sure I am using a 5/8ths, I’ll have to check but I am running a 180 so maybe.

Thanks guys! Really nice to get help = )

Also the axel from swingarm for the break caliper will not have room now becouse of the 160 tire. How do you do here? = ) Is it legal to make it bend? lite a curve or someting?

If you mean the torque arm from the calliper to the swingarm then just make one from aluminium flat bar, it gives you enough room to clear the tyre.

The offset sprocket is crazy money! Can you do this with some distans adapter or someting?

no not enough room on the output shaft, if you slide the sprocket too much you will not be able to use the locking tab washer.  yeah the offset sprockets are fecking expensive :/  but i believe theirs a Kawasaki one that will work but don't know which one !!!!

Ah yes - I remember that too. I checked my notes and I think it's there's a bunch that have an 8mill offset. (ZZR/ZX6/etc). But a lot of them run 520 or 525 chains though.

I know this is for a 520 chain but it's one more with the zzr front sprocket. If you go to the JT sprockets web site they have a full list of all front and rear sprockets with diagrams like this. It's very helpful I find, as some makes/models don't list all sizes, so you can then check if you can get the size of sprocket you need but off a different bike ;)

I tried an old ZZR1100 (C) sprocket on an oil cooled Suzuki once and it didn't fit. The splines were different. The sprockets for the ZZR-C model are offset as OEM. The ZZR-D model sprockets are flat and use a spacer behind the sprocket with a slightly longer output shaft. This was because some C model bikes didn't have the gearbox sprockets securely fitted at the factory (in USA) causing several accidents. Kawasaki had to issue a recall on all ZZR-1100Cs. Ask me how I know this....
