rodneya Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 I have a slabby motor I want to sell, but I would like to check compression first. Problem is I do not have an oil cooler that fits so there is no oil in the motor. If I plug the cooler takeoff points under the motor and fill with oil, is the oil still going to circulate to where it needs to go while cranking for the compression test? Im assuming there is a bypass.Any suggestions on how to temporarily block the cooler takeoff holes. Quote
Dezza Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 To run the engine with no cooler you have to link the cooler holes using a spare oil cooler hose and fittings that's long and flexible enough or making one if you have some bits lying around. For a compression test you may be able to get way with simply blanking the takeoff holes though. Personally, I'd try and link them if possible . Quote
clivegto Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 One is out and one is in they need to be linked together whatever you do. Quote
Gixer1460 Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 You could damage pump or bypass valves if totally blocked off - not designed to bypass everything! As others said - make up link pipe. Quote

rodneya Posted November 20, 2023 Author Posted November 20, 2023 Somebody have the thread size for the fittings needed? Quote

fatblokeonbandit Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 I’ve got a hose and fittings you can borrow if you like Quote
rodneya Posted November 26, 2023 Author Posted November 26, 2023 (edited) What should the compression reading be around? Motor has been sitting for a while and will be cold (really cold, about 5 deg C in my garage right now) Edit: tracked down a manual and the rebuild limit is 114 with normal between 142 and 199 PSi (warm motor readings) Im getting 130 PSi cold. How much would that go up to if the motor was warm? Edited November 26, 2023 by rodneya New info added Quote
Gixer1460 Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 A bit, maybe 5-10psi? I've never been fussed about cold/warm/hot, it's comparative numbers that's important! 2 Quote
