Captain Chaos Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 Hi, the oil seal behind the signal generator on my mate's EFE is slightly leaking. Can it be replaced without splitting the crankcases? TFM does not mention it but on the pics it looks like it is possible. Quote
Gixer1460 Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 Haynes indicates its replacement is with cases split and from memory it does rely on clamp force to keep it in place. Problem is, you'll have to destroy the old one to remove it without splitting the cases and possibly damage the new one trying to fit with them assembled at which point you'll need another seal and need to split the cases anyway! Arttu Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 Yes you can replace it without splitting the cases. Most likely you need to drill a hole on old one and pry it out with a wood screw or something similar. But the new one should go in by gentle tapping. I have done that once. Quote

Never done said swap myself, but heard form others that tapping in new seals into the crankcases can be quite a tight fit. Also I wouldn't write off the old seal yet. On my Kat (EFE-engine) the crank seal developed an oil weep too, but this somehow fixed itself eventually after some time riding the bike. You might also try scraping the contact area of the seal on the crank carefully as dirt might have collected in here preventing a tight seal. If oil is actually dripping out though chances to save the old seal might seem slim.. Quote
Screwriverracing Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 Before you butcher it try spraying carb cleaner on it, worked on mine for about 5000 miles. Splitting the cases is the best way,but have also done it in situ, but didn't last as long as splitting cases. Cheers SRR Quote
