bigpants Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 Hiya everyone. Just got back from Xmas shopping , bike running fine but took lefthand side panel off and noticed block connecter from generator was really melted and as I touched it the wires came off and also the adjacent 4 wire block connector from cdi also melted - didn't touch that. Where do I even start ? Quote
bigpants Posted December 22, 2017 Author Posted December 22, 2017 Should have said '87 slabside 1100 ! Quote
CockneyRick Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 (edited) Sounds like reg/rec blown. Check voltage at battery when running (Not long) if above 13/14v then def blown & probably boiling your battery too Edited December 22, 2017 by CockneyRick Quote
bigpants Posted January 9, 2018 Author Posted January 9, 2018 Just got the old girl running again and voltage across battery terminals 14.6v , is that too high ? Quote
Gixer1460 Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 If rpm when measured was about 5000 then that's about top end ok - if that was at idle / tick over then no it's not ok. 1 Quote
bigpants Posted January 10, 2018 Author Posted January 10, 2018 Yeah that was at low revs , don't know exactly but way lower than 5k. Hmm....is there a bodge I can do till I find a new gen/reg/rec ? Quote

CockneyRick Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 (edited) As he says, get the reg/rec done/replaced & hope your battery is still salvageable Edited January 11, 2018 by CockneyRick Quote

On an oil boiler? Really. If you are in the shit and need the bike for transport, disconnect the alternator wiring and run it total lose. You'll need to re charge every 40 mins 20 mins if you use the lights Quote
CockneyRick Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 What do u mean Dunc? Iv'e run a Honka, Electrex & a Yamhaha on previous boilers! Quote

CockneyRick Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 Hahaha, ur right, getting me air & oils mixed up! Apologies, get another Alt @bigpants Quote
bigpants Posted January 11, 2018 Author Posted January 11, 2018 Thanks for all the info everyone. Just to update you though , I just fitted the gen from my spare engine. There were some small visual differences to the gen casing but it fitted fine and bike fired straight up. But now reading 15.5v at battery terminals at approx 2 -3k. Could something else be causing this - I'm guessing not as the reg shouldn't be able to chuck out 15+v but thought I'd ask. Quote
CockneyRick Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 way too much, it'll boil your battery. Deffo the reg/rec in the Alternator end cover as @dupersuncsaid Quote
CockneyRick Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 (edited) If it's doing it with another Alt, then either they're both fooked, or i haven't got a clue? Also the Alts have different amounts of teeth on em & could destroy your Alt/clutch if they don't match Edited January 11, 2018 by CockneyRick Quote
bigpants Posted January 11, 2018 Author Posted January 11, 2018 Different amounts of teeth ?! I don't like the sound of that. Guess she goes into temporary retirement till a new reg/rec is sourced. The coincidence of two regs being faulty is worrying but I guess I've got no options but to buy another and suck it and see. Quote
bigpants Posted January 11, 2018 Author Posted January 11, 2018 Also Rick , could you explain the difference between the alts and how I identify which one goes with which engine. Ive done so much work trying to get both engines running over the years I can't be sure all the right parts are with the right engine anymore. The alt I just fitted did turn the engine much quicker. Thanks. Quote
bigpants Posted January 11, 2018 Author Posted January 11, 2018 I've just realised how stupid that last sentence was. Bike did turn over really fast though. Quote
CockneyRick Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 Count the teeth on both, can't remember wot the different amounts are, but the 1100 & 750 def have different. You can swap the gear off the ends tho. Just make sure its well loctited on. And also i don't think the reg/rec is available seperately, it's the whole Alt you will prob have to get Quote
Captain Chaos Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 @bigpantsbefore spending money on another generator, check this out: http://oldskoolsuzuki.info/archives/400 1 Quote
bigpants Posted January 11, 2018 Author Posted January 11, 2018 Hmm... cheers captain chaos. So the alt can be teased into overcharging. This might suggest there's nothing wrong with reg/rec but a fault somewhere else dragging the output voltage up. Well I've been having misfire/cdi issues since I got the bike running after an 8 yr lay up . I'm not sure where that leaves me but ill go over that thread u posted for me until I understand it. Also just discovered both my engines are u704 and not UK spec 703's. Quote
bigpants Posted January 11, 2018 Author Posted January 11, 2018 Thank heaven for small mercies , or rather small cogs. Thing is how do I know which alt goes with which engine or which is the old alt out since both engines are 1052 u704's ? Quote
CockneyRick Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 I'd guess (and u can put em alongside eachother) that they are the same. Only worry i had was cogs, but i'm sure the 750's all had same teeth. Quote
