  1. Hi everyone. After my 1100j got nicked a few months back I thought I'd never be able to afford another one but I got lucky and bought a real cheapy in dreadful condition to rebuild/restore. The exhaust on it is completely shot beyond repair but a Google of the engine number reveals it to be a gsx1100f engine in the new 1100 slabside. So , what's my best option for an exhaust ? I can modify brackets and to a limited degree pipes and or bends but which headers will fit the block , clear the sump ? And which exhausts will run best ? Any advice much appreciated.
  2. Hmm... No £10 spacer kits then.
  3. Hi everyone , has anybody seen or tried a rear jack up kit on a slabby ? My bike sits really low and I'm interested in trying a different angle of attack.
  4. I would guess from what you've described that you've got a fuelling issue rather than an electrical one. Hopefully some of the more clued up members will chip in.
  5. Everything looked nice and wet now. Not sure what a journal is but took off the end aluminium clamp on the end of the cam. There are some signs of it picking up but feels smooth and no rock in the cam.
  6. Mine doesn't have a tab washer but I did put a penny washer over the outside and an M6 bolt into the output shaft.
  7. I'm a bit daunted at the prospect of removing the cam. The lobes showed some marking , not scored more smeared. I looked at the oil passage ways in the cover and noticed that if I blew down the right side one there was more resistance than the left . This turned out to be the Allen bolt on the outside wound in till it partially blocked the oil flow. Didn't think this was normal so I've fitted a small washer to it , put it all back together and just been out for a gentle ride. I'll get the cover back off and see if it's dry again.
  8. Tdc on 1 , t mark to left pick up , 1 mark on exhaust cam to gasket face , 22pins arrow to arrow inclusive. Is that all correct ?
  9. I'll give it a go. Also ignition pick ups and wiring look identical.
  10. Cam cover off. Everything in one piece as far as I can tell but intake cam on 3 and 4 looks dry and hot.
  11. I've got the 1109 sitting in the wheel barrow and just taking the 1052 apart , hopefully all the bolts will come out and will confirm ignition pick ups. I've never worked on a 4stroke before so fingers crossed. Just about to lift cam cover on 1052 , good news is that there's copper slip on the button head bolts so someone's been in there.
  12. I don't have any info or history for the 1109. It was an Eblag purchase. The bloke told me he tried it and it was strong but all I've got is his word. I picked it up from his lock up and he had a garage full of slabby bits so I took him at his word. I've fitted it to my bike twice and tried every cheap trick , two batteries and a big diesel battery and done nowt but burn out a starter motor. Not one puff , bang or pop.
  13. I would rather keep it an 'all say what now!?' bike. I just wondered if a b12 motor might be a cheap and quick way to get me back on the road. The 1052 engine needs to come out for inspection and repair so I could put the 1109 back in and try again (put my hip out last time I did that- I'm only 8stone). But I'm not sure where to start diagnosing why it doest fire so any help would be much appreciated.
  14. My first thought would be an air leak somewhere , a crack opening up as something warms. I've heard a simple test is to warm up then spray something non-explosive around the suspected areas. If it gets sucked into the engine you should hear the difference.
  15. I take no pride in my shameful abuse of this lovely bike. I've saved up a bit and sold my sister so the engine will get lots of shiny new bits. I've also got a spare motor fitted with 1127 pistons , bought off Eblag and meant to be lovely , thing is I've never managed to make it fire even once. B12 motor maybe ?
  16. Hi everyone. I recently got my slabby up and running after an 8year lay off. It had a few issues so I've been nursing it around between 4-5k rpm. Got it all sort yesterday so gave it a small handful. At about 7k there was a very quick judder (which I thought was clutch) but when I slowed down the cam chain (I think) was very noisy. I suspected a broken cct so put in a spare. Noise went but maybe some small tapping. Next ride judder occured again and now no chain noise but lots of loud tapping. So question is has cam chain stretched so much that cct is barely working on it and has chain slipped round. Bikes done 100,000miles and has unknown history. All input very welcome. Ta
  17. Hiya everyone. Am I being stupid or is it impossible to refit the airbox with the motor in place ?
  18. Thank heaven for small mercies , or rather small cogs. Thing is how do I know which alt goes with which engine or which is the old alt out since both engines are 1052 u704's ?
  19. Hmm... cheers captain chaos. So the alt can be teased into overcharging. This might suggest there's nothing wrong with reg/rec but a fault somewhere else dragging the output voltage up. Well I've been having misfire/cdi issues since I got the bike running after an 8 yr lay up . I'm not sure where that leaves me but ill go over that thread u posted for me until I understand it. Also just discovered both my engines are u704 and not UK spec 703's.
  20. I've just realised how stupid that last sentence was. Bike did turn over really fast though.
  21. Also Rick , could you explain the difference between the alts and how I identify which one goes with which engine. Ive done so much work trying to get both engines running over the years I can't be sure all the right parts are with the right engine anymore. The alt I just fitted did turn the engine much quicker. Thanks.
  22. Different amounts of teeth ?! I don't like the sound of that. Guess she goes into temporary retirement till a new reg/rec is sourced. The coincidence of two regs being faulty is worrying but I guess I've got no options but to buy another and suck it and see.
  23. Thanks for all the info everyone. Just to update you though , I just fitted the gen from my spare engine. There were some small visual differences to the gen casing but it fitted fine and bike fired straight up. But now reading 15.5v at battery terminals at approx 2 -3k. Could something else be causing this - I'm guessing not as the reg shouldn't be able to chuck out 15+v but thought I'd ask.
  24. Yeah that was at low revs , don't know exactly but way lower than 5k. Hmm....is there a bodge I can do till I find a new gen/reg/rec ?
  25. Just got the old girl running again and voltage across battery terminals 14.6v , is that too high ?
