Pheasantplucker Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 Has anyone removed the air fork arrangement from a gs850 or gs1000? I have a jap import gs750gl shaft drive with missing fork tops so would like to replace them with a standard cap. Could I put a spacer above the spring perhaps? Any advice would be greatly appreciated Quote
wraith Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 Yes, as the air forks where crap anyway Quote
strima Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 I have a 30mm spacer in the top of each fork leg and have no problems with them. Quote
Joebloggs Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 (edited) If the spacer is only to reduce the air gap, would it not be simpler to add 30mm of oil? Providing you don't end up with hydraulic lock that is! Edited September 22, 2016 by Joebloggs Quote
Joebloggs Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 Raise the oil level by 30mm is what I meant Quote
Captain Chaos Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 spacer is for adding preload to the spring I guess Quote
Joebloggs Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 Not sure pre loading a saggy old spring is the way forward, putting the cost of the spacers (assuming they will cost you something) towards a set of new springs and set the air gap to suit would give you a much better front end. Quote
wraith Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 (edited) I would not put more oil in the forks. Look at the size of the standard fork cap (air type) then look at the size of the new cap you're going to use and make a spacer up for the different size. You can use a peace of blue plastic pipe (main water type of the right size) that's the oldskool way and what Progressive spring recommended. Also old 2p coin's worked well Edited September 23, 2016 by wraith Added a bit Quote
