Andyb Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 (edited) Hi guys, hoping I can get some help here. My 550 is blowing a single coil, the one that does cylinders 2&3. I have replaced this twice, but 2&3 downpipes are not warming up and it sounds like a washing machine full of gravel. Checked clearances and they are okay.Compression is good, so assume the rings are good.any ideas! Edited July 12, 2015 by Andyb Quote
Ben Slabby Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 If it's destroying the same coil continually, you're looking at a wiring fault. Can you swap the cdi to eliminate that? Has it run ok previously? 1 Quote
Andyb Posted July 12, 2015 Author Posted July 12, 2015 Running points, so I don't think I've got a cdi. Quote
Ben Slabby Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 Ah, ok. The E should have CDI rather than points. Has it been running previously? It sounds like the coil is charging constantly causing it to burn out. Quote
Andyb Posted July 12, 2015 Author Posted July 12, 2015 I bought is a 'it was running the last time I used it' bollox. Think you may be onto something re wiring, when I swap the wiring for the coils over 1&4 don't work. Would a knackered condensor do that? Quote
Ben Slabby Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 Right, to be honest it sounds like the points for 2&3 aren't opening, causing it to charge that coil all the time.. That can cause it to burn out. A knackered condenser would just give you a crap spark. Either that or someone has made a total balls of the wiring and got a permanent ground to the coil. 1 Quote
Ben Slabby Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 my '79 GS550E had points.I stand corrected. Quote
Ben Slabby Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 Any good with a multimeter? My next step would be to disconnect the wires from coil 2&3, one will be +12v with the ignition on. The other is switched to ground (earth/-ve) via the points. The wire to the points (black/yellow from memory) should go open-circuit at the appropriate interval with the engine cranking. Quote
Andyb Posted July 12, 2015 Author Posted July 12, 2015 Thanks @Ben Slabby. Will give this a go tomorrow when I'm back in the garage. Will update after I've tested it out. 1 Quote
johnr Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 also worth remembering that coils for points models are different to coils for cdi models.and worth replacing the condensors as a matter of course. 1 Quote
Andyb Posted July 17, 2015 Author Posted July 17, 2015 Cheers @johnr. Didn't know that. Thought they were all the same. I think the points coils are 3.3ohms. Is that right? Quote
busa ash Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 Condensors failed on my gs550 I bought some condensors from a car spares shop for an old mini. Worked a treat Quote
Andyb Posted July 18, 2015 Author Posted July 18, 2015 (edited) Bugger, just seen your post @busa ash. Off to Mill Autos tomorrow then. Won't do any harm to change them. Possibly 34 yrs old dont suppose you know what year I need. Edited July 18, 2015 by Andyb Quote

canamant Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 If te condensor is knackered and passing current then the coil controlled by that points/condensor pair will have a permanent feed and will get hot and break down. 1 Quote
