Crass Posted January 2 Posted January 2 (edited) I know there was something on here before about this but my searching isn't finding it. I fancy running my Slingy without the bellypan but the fairing side panels need supporting to stop them flapping. I recall that someone elsewhere had made some brackets in carbon fibre for sale which connected everything to a bolt on the genny / clutch covers but they were rather on the expensive side. I haven't got experience of buggering about with carbon fibre so looking for opinions - what do people think of the idea of buying some carbon fibre plate and cutting my own brackets after making templates in plywood to get everything right? Can you tidy up the cut edges successfully/ recoat with lacquer? What thickness plate would be adequate? Carbon fibre plate seems cheap enough and cutting it with a dremel diamond wheel seems to be doable. The only thing I'm not sure about is getting a tidy finish rather than ending up with something looking bodged up. Another issue maybe if a flat plate is not going to line up i.e. needs to be curved. In which case cutting out of alloy plate which could be formed to the required profile may be the way to go. Edited January 2 by Crass Typos Quote
Upshotknothole Posted January 2 Posted January 2 (edited) I think they were on facebook. Carbon fiber is impregnated with the resin when it's made, you can cut and sand it just like fiberglass. You'll need to wear a proper respirator though, you do not want that crap in your lungs. They will need to be curved to attach to the case covers. I've been running my 750 without the lowers for a few years since I took a rock to the left side on a road trip. Bike has been up over 130 MPH plenty of times without issues. They'll flap around a little bit, but they're stiff enough that they won't break off if they're properly attached. Some thin aluminum sheet would work just as well, be more flexible, and not require a respirator to cut and shape. If you look at the bottom of your mids, they've got a decent curve to them, anything flat isn't gonna mount up very well. Edited January 2 by Upshotknothole typo 1 Quote
Crass Posted January 3 Author Posted January 3 Thanks for that, I'll look into what I can do with some alloy plate then. 1 Quote
TraxX Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Made some simple mounts out of 2mm sheet alloy for my 1100 that mount with a little bushing on one of the ignition/starter cover bolts. On my 750 I run also run 2/3 Fairings but without any additional support. Held up fine even on long flatout autobahn rides. But yes they wobble around, note to myself copy the Mounts of the 1100. 6 Quote

TraxX Posted yesterday at 06:42 AM Posted yesterday at 06:42 AM hm to one that were on the facebook group looked like better quality compared to them ... Quote
Upshotknothole Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago He will ship to the states. About $210 shipped for a couple of slightly curved pieces of carbon fiber and a handful of fasteners. Seems a bit excessive. 1 Quote
