MrSuzukiGS1000 Posted October 7 Posted October 7 I recently purchase 1981 GS1000G from a buddy, but with unknow origins to both of us. after changing the oil and running a bit i noticed alot of old oil, then new oil, pouring out of a hole under the (Generator cover???) im not sure what its called or where its coming from but i want to get an idea before i dig into the engine a mess more stuff up. (located at bottom of engine where light is pointing) Also lots of smoke from around the engine after running but cant find where from Quote
wraith Posted October 8 Posted October 8 Remove the gear cover (rear engine cover) to get a better look, it a dry cover so no oil will come out. It could just be the front engine cover gasket or behind the rear cover, is where you fill the transmission oil so one of the bolts maybe lose 1 Quote
prutser Posted October 8 Posted October 8 Lets start with the basics. You havent overfilled the engine with oil? Wouldnt be the first one to fill up all the way to the filler cap instead of till the 'F' mark of the inspection window/glass. Next thing that comes to my mind is that there could be some oil seeping past the starter motor rubber ring. And then makes its way down behind the sprocket cover, more or less towards somewhere you are pointing at. Quote
MrSuzukiGS1000 Posted October 9 Author Posted October 9 both sound like great places to start, and thankfully, lol, i filled the oil to manufacturer spec, about 3.3 liters or 3.5 quarts Quote

Reinhoud Posted October 10 Posted October 10 Mine leaks from behind the cylinders, this accumilates while riding, then when I parked it on the side stand it all comes out of the drain from where the startermotor sits. It also looks like it loeks from the alternator cover... Quote
MrSuzukiGS1000 Posted October 10 Author Posted October 10 Sooo i did a little digging and after some struggle with stripped screws (from a previous owner) i finally got the stator cover off and found a decent amount of oil inside, sot sure if its supposed to be there but probably since there was a gasket and the gears. i also took off the panel for im not sure what but wanted to see what was in there. anyways the gasket was junk and i might need a new stator because it looks a bit burnt? or maybe just covered in oil. definitely need need crews and gasket if anybody could hook me up with some that would be awesome! MrSuzukiGS1000 Posted October 10 Author Posted October 10 it does not go to that hole though so ruled that out Quote
Gixer1460 Posted October 11 Posted October 11 The stator's always tend to look burnt - usually down to poor oil maintenance / long periods between changes! So, as long as its working - save your pennies! 2 Quote
Dennisgs1085 Posted October 19 Posted October 19 The oil leak could be from the [ Mystery hole ]. That is under the starter motor. Is the O ring on starter motor ok ?, I had a leak like that and it was the culprit. Quote
johnr Posted October 19 Posted October 19 o ring on the starter motor may have perrished, letting oil into the starter motor mounting and it will then run out as youve shown. Quote
MrSuzukiGS1000 Posted October 21 Author Posted October 21 starter motor looked dry, ive taken the cover off a few times and no oil in sight Quote
MrSuzukiGS1000 Posted November 4 Author Posted November 4 okay so i figured it out!! the hole was from the starter drain hole but what was causing the issue was the previous owner ran the crank case overflow(????) line down through the hole. next question is how to get the line to stop spewing oil every time i run the bike. i filled oil to spec after an oil and filter change and i cant even see any oil in the sight glass aswell Quote
Gixer1460 Posted November 4 Posted November 4 If its blowing out oil - you've got crankcase pressure problems, and if the engine is off, and stood upright and you still can't see oil in the sight glass - its underfilled! The first issue means either a blocked or defective breather or routed badly or connected back on itself making a closed loop . . . . . or the engine is worn and breathing too heavily! The second - put more oil in till the level is between the marks! Quote
Dennisgs1085 Posted November 4 Posted November 4 Is the breather pipe from final drive bevel unit putting out oil ?. That is separate from crankcase and the seal between the two is leaking. Remove the level plug from bevel unit and see if it's overfilled. If the seal between crankcase and final drive is leaking, engine out and split the cases to fix. Quote
