Swirl Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 (edited) As it says above how hard is it to sling a water cooled Rf900 motor in a spare oil cooled 1989 slingshot frame I've got knocking about Edited February 10, 2016 by Swirl missed a bit out Quote
Rene EFE Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Not very clued up on the watercoolers, but if you keep the RF lump in one piece, you're gonna have a hard time with the carbs (downdraft) Easy fix would be an R head, but don't know if it's as easy as just swapping one for the other. 1 Quote
snoorder Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I'm with Rene, It's not going to be an easy fit because of the RF900 downdraft carbs. I have read somewhere on the old forum that the head can be exchanged for a 750W head with normal carbs. At least then the engine should fit in the frame. Next challenge would be the engine mounts and location of the sprocket. Again I don't know the details but there are some differences. Unfortunately because I like the idea of an oilcooled engine in the (better looking) watercooled frame... It has been done but it's a lot of work. Quote
Swirl Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 unsure on carb set up but know there 40mm of some sort, just an idea milling round in my head Quote
Gammaboy Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 RF900 carbs are ~36mm downdrafts - flat out not going to fit in an oil cooled frame. Quote
Swirl Posted February 13, 2016 Author Posted February 13, 2016 I bought a full Rf9 the other day, Ooooppppssss, so no need to worry about it going in the frame now. Quote
gixxerturbo Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 I had a 93 750 with a RF9 engine and i used the 750 head from the oem engine but I remember the compression was really high and I had my head machined the other option would be a really thick headgasket or a spacer on the bottom of the cyl like many people do with turbo bikes to lower the comp rate.
