davecara Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Just picked up an engine and carbs for my chop, bloke said it was from a GS but other than that he wasnt sure. Engine number is N702-113604 Any ideas? Quote
Captain Chaos Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 (edited) pics would help. N means 500 - 599cc, 7 means 4 cil. 4 stroke, 02 means second evolution. Edited January 30, 2016 by captain chaos i'm hungry 1 Quote
johnr Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 so sounds like a gs550 or possibly a gsx550 then? Quote
davecara Posted January 30, 2016 Author Posted January 30, 2016 (edited) I think its GSX, just need to figure out what year etc so I can try and get a cdi (or has it got points? not even had a proper look at it yet!) for it and a sprocket cover Edited January 30, 2016 by davecara Quote
Gixer1460 Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 I believe all the GSX variants used electronic ignition - no points. Jeez - hope there's nothing wrong with the carbs as i've never even seen a set of those - pair of dual barrel / single diaphragm Mikuni's ? - spares are not gonna be common! Quote
Captain Chaos Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 those carbs are a royal pain in the ass. And even worse is that nothing else fits on those GSX550 engines. But when they run they are quite good. Quote
Captain Chaos Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 (edited) the GSX550 was produced from 1983 till 1987, mostly unchanged as far as I know. There was also a 500cc version. Edited January 30, 2016 by captain chaos spelling Quote

Any ideas what other (if any!) CDI units will be compatible with it? If its gonna be a royal PITA i'll just move it on and keep a look out for something a bit more common to put in the frame Quote
johnr Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 carbs have a bad reputation for being full of things that can go wrong... Quote
davecara Posted January 30, 2016 Author Posted January 30, 2016 Carbs generally or these in particular? Im beginning to think thus motor is a bad idea! Only owes me £50 though so not the end of the world if I dont use it. Any one have any clues about cdi compatibility? Quote
Gixer1460 Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Re : CDI - I would guess that the GSX750 will probably work ok - not exactly a screamer or power monster so may suit all depends on the ign pick up pattern - single or dual? As regard carbs a set of std 750 slide carbs could work if re spaced or is the cyl. head manifold weird as well to preclude that option? Who knows.............the carbs may be fine after a good ultrasonic bath - wouldn't take them apart as you're liable to rip a gasket or shred an o-ring then they are definitely FUBAR'd without spares! davecara Posted January 31, 2016 Author Posted January 31, 2016 I'll borrow a 750 CDI and see if it runs on bench. If it runs i'll go with it if not I'll try and get something a little easier to work with! Plus point is though, there is a load of bits on that site and theyre all cheap enough! Quote

Any one have any clues about cdi compatibility? unfortunately, these in particular. of all the gs and gsx variants, these twin choke carbs from the 16 valve gsx550 are renowned for being a royal pain in the arse to get right, theyre full of seals and o rings and have a history of going off very quicky, as has been said, when theyre right, theyre pretty sweet, but they need to be kept mated to the stock airbox and you need to keep on top of them. not sure how they will react to use with modern unleaded fuels, but as unleaded these days seems to fuck up almost everything it touches, i see no reason how these will be different. Captain Chaos Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 in other words, find yourself a B6 / Teapot engine. 1 Quote

wraith Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 The gsx550 motors are a good motor but as people are saying the carbs are a pain, grate when they work but are fidley on the choke side, had 2 gsx550 one I dispatched for 3 years and the second I streetfighterd. Loads of bits on that site for bits. Quote
