MJ Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 G'day all. New to the forum. Hoping that this has not been covered before, and that I'm posting this in the right place... I am trying to find out if anyone has had any joy finding good rubber in the 170/60r17 to suit my 1990 GSXR750L. Or if anyone has experience with fitting a 180/55r17 to theses bikes? I'm running Pirelli Rosso Corsas on my 1200 Bandit, and was hoping to find something a bit stickier for the 750. I have found Michelin PP's, Metzeler M5's and Bridgestone S20's in the right profile. Diablo II's are available too and are great. But that's a backward step from what I am running at the moment. Cheers in advance for any advice. Quote
tabby59 Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 What is the rear rim width on your 90? I have an 86 Slabby with 17" Dymags {3.5F, 5.5R} and I have no problems running a 180/55 on the rear. So far I have run Michelin PPs, PP/2CTs, and now Power SuperSports. Quote
MJ Posted January 9, 2016 Author Posted January 9, 2016 Rim is a 5.5 I'm quite sure. I just noticed that it already comes in pretty fine along the torque arm for the rear caliper. I was thinking I could try slipping in the rear off my Bandit if I get really excited one day.. You never noticed any big difference in handling going to the 180? I know the profiles are very close between the two. Quote
tabby59 Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 When I went to the 17s, that was the size I started with. I had also made an eccentric bushing for my Ohlins shock at the same time. It allowed me to raise the rear over 3/4s of an inch. Between that and the 17s it steers like a dream. Much less effort than the 18s and even more stable. Quote
Captain Chaos Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 yes 750L has a 5,5" rim. Tyre width depends on the tyre manufacturer. For example on my 750L I have a Pirelli 180/55-17, and a mate has on his 1100M (with exactly the same rear rim) a Michelin 180/50-17. The pirelli is 180mm wide, the Michelin is almost 190mm wide. So if you buy a Michelin 170/60-17 the chance is very big that it's close to 180mm wide, just like a Pirelli 180/50-17. Don't know about other tyre makes but width varies quite a bit. Quote
banoffee Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Ran 180/55 on my 750L no problem. Ended up jacking up the rear though to get it to corner nicely at speed. Tyres were BT023. Quote
kokolis Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 180 fits fine, michelin 170 or 180 on the same rim doesnt have that much difference, I ve tried both Quote
Rene EFE Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Plus 180 gives you a lot more options to choose from. 1 Quote
MJ Posted January 10, 2016 Author Posted January 10, 2016 Looks like a 180 is the goods. That definately opens up the possibilities for me. Maybe I'll find some joy with Supercorsas or Racetecs after allh thank you very much for the advice on the GSXR. She's my new addition to the stable, and I want to make sure I dont take any backward steps along the way.. Quote
