manden
My 88 alternator is fak'd. I found an 89 on the net. Anyone knows if it is a straight swap? Quote Link to comment
fatblokeonbandit
88 what??? 750/1100/600???? 1 Quote Link to comment
fatblokeonbandit
Both 750's have 30 teeth on the drive gear so are swappable, but 1100's have 28 teeth so the gear needs to be swapped, 600 teapots have 30 teeth as well, so will do a turn. depends what you have and what the one on the interweb is?????? manden
An 1100 88 and an 1100 89 Quote Link to comment
fatblokeonbandit
then they should both have 28 teeth, count them to check. You are of course, very aware of the pitfalls and how easy it is to mess up the installation of the alternator, and break the drive gear on the back of the clutch basket Quote Link to comment
manden
The one I pulled off the 1988 engine had 26teeth. And the "new" from the 1989 engine had 28 teeth Quote Link to comment
clivegto
Swap the cogs over and be careful refitting it as FB says. Quote Link to comment
Dezza
GSXR1100s: 88 = slabside; 89 = slingshot, hence the discrepancy. Quote Link to comment
manden
I think that the 28teeth will be better because of the lower revs. I installed the 28teeth in it with no problems. It is also smaller and lighter. There are no numbers on the 26teeth an I suspect it from being a bandit unit, but I don't know for sure. Quote Link to comment
fatblokeonbandit
How did the 28 tooth cog fit?? Its bigger diameter than the 26 tooth one, so will not mesh with the drive grear on the back of the clutch juts bend it and break it??? Unless the problem with the alternator not working is that the 26 tooth cog was not engaing with the drive gear on the clutch, not turning and not charging. The 88 1100 should have 28 teeth.??? part number for the gear on a 1100 86-88 G,H,J 22730-06B02 GEAR, GENERATOR DRIVEN (NT:28 1989 1100K 22730-06B03 GGEAR, GENERATOR DRIVEN (NT:28 1 Quote Link to comment
manden
It fitted ok actually. One was 59mm and the other 62mm. Just think the old was from a different bike. Bandit? Quote Link to comment
Dezza
What clutch does the recipient engine have then? If you remove the cover to investigate it's also much easier to re-fit the alternator correctly. A clutch cover gasket is a lot cheaper than a broken gear and if you have parts in good condition (no deep scores in the mating faces) smearing the gasket with copperslip enables re-use without leakage . 1 Quote Link to comment
manden
Looks like the 26teeth didn't engage as deep as the 28tteeth does. But the 26teeth alternate made it possible to take the bst40 in and out without removing the alternator Quote Link to comment
