  1. Spot on I'll get a kit ordered, thanks for the info
  2. Nice one, I reckon a carb overhaul wouldn't hurt, as I mentioned the air fuel is brand new, I'll order a kit for each carb. It fires up without any hassle, runs well and picks up pulls really well but still feels like it's hunting at steady throttle, is that normal?
  3. Hi Johnr, right I've checked plugs, all sooted. Oil doesn't smell of fuel so I don't think there is any dumping, the fuel tank isn't leaking neither are the pipes, the bike is locked away in my garage when not in use so no theft issues and the air filter is brand new. Before I remove the carbs what notch should the needles be set on as standard?
  4. I'll have a look at the plugs at the weekend, I'm wondering as its an ex Dutch bike would the carbs be set different for a different octane of fuel. Yep as I said, I'm sure I read somewhere I should be getting over 40 to the gallon.
  5. Hi All, me again with yet another question. What is the expected fuel economy on a 79 GS750. I reckon out of a full tank I'm getting around 100 miles and that's not ragging it, I reckon pretty average riding. At 3.5 imperial gallons that's under 30 mpg. I have read that I should be getting around 40 mpg. I'm wondering if the carbs want overhauling.
  6. Time to crack open a bevy and some cleaning fluid and enjoy bringing it back to life, any excuse to spend time the shed I reckon.
  7. Who could resist, spot on. I'm after one of those seats for my 750, where can you get them or are they no longer available?
  8. Evening Folks, finally the GS arrived back home this evening with no rattle, more responsive and smoother, what a difference. The problem was down to a cam bucket not rotating smoothly and a Y#m#h# shim fitted instead of a Suzuki one. Apparently, back in the day some 'can't be arsed mechanic' would bang a Yam shim in if thats all they had, although they are the same size the Suzuki shim has a chamfered edge where as the Yam one doesn't. Cam end float is fine and it pulls like a train at 6000rpm. I'll video it running at the weekend and post it. Thanks to you all for your help, assistance, patience and no doubt piss taking, but it was worth exploring and the wait, can't wait to crack on using it now.
  9. Im still waiting to hear from the garage, although its looking promising. As its a mates place I can't nag too much but I've been promised it back this week, so a soon as I know I'll post the news. Been working flat out so haven't had time to enjoy the weather anyway.
  10. Looks good, what did you paint your down pipes with, mine are a bit tatty and I've heard chromers won't touch down pipes.
  11. I was due to hear the news about my GS today but got home late, so fingers crossed tomorrow.

    First Suzy

This was my first bike, a 1985 DR 125, check out the stone washed denim, very 1988
  15. Then I was lucky enough to meet the late, great Hizzy at mallory park where he signed my tank. You can just make out his signature on the recess in the tank. I 'T' Cut it out when I sold the bike.
  16. Below are pics of my previous Suzukis. A 1985 DR 125, my first bike and yes I had a lot more hair back then
  17. Afternoon All. OK I've just got back from visiting my sick GS and the prognosis is good. The unmentionable named shim is a lot different to the Suzuki one which replaced it and could have been responsible for the noise. The cam bucket is noticbley more restricted in its movements so a new one is being delivered Tuesday and the even better news is there is no issue with the cam end float. The damage to the cam lobe is being sorted so fingers crossed will get it back next week all sorted. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all your suggestions and advice it's been well received.
  18. Morning mate, Spoke to my mate this morning and they found a shim from another Jap bike, not prepared to say which one in case i get slated for using foul language, but they make guitars and pianos, so they've changed that and one of the buckets is not rotating as smoothly as the others. Also, they have found a mark on one of the cam lobes and think it looks like its been dropped, probably by the monkey who used the wrong shim. No mention of end play, but i'm popping up there this afternoon and they are ordering a bucket so fingers crossed.
  19. Bike's in today for investigative surgery, Madog, if they cant find what it is and cure it then yep lets get that support group set up
  20. done the screwdriver trick and the noise was coming from the cam chain cover, not from the cam end caps, but ill soon know on Thursday.
  21. No mine's less frequent but regular, as if theres one spot on the cam chain that hits something every revolution of the chain, if you rev it, it goes away, its just on tick over. The bloke looking at it on Thursday suggested a bucket. If I get chance I'll try to video it and post it but I'm about to leave for a fews days away working. Lets see what he's got to say Thursday, but as per Swiss Toni, its already driving me up the wall and I can't rest until I find what it is.
  22. You're all right, I get it and if I can't sort I'll live with it, but I took it to a mate of a mate who's an oldskool mechanic and he's worked on loads of these when they were new and now they are classics. He's having it next Thursday and he's gonna have a look. The sound coincides with the cam chain rotation so worth looking at. If he can't sort I'll stop my fecking whining. If he sorts it then more info to feed back into the forum
