  1. I know, I know live with it, but it'll bother me until I find out if I can stop it.
  2. Nice one, i have just downloaded a 10 page doc which discusses a fix, but it looks a bit technical and very involved. I have also found mention of Camshaft wave washers, has anybody used these and if so where can you get them in the UK.
  3. Johnr, 100,000 miles that's good news at least its not a terminal issue. OK then so whats the best way of dealing with it, i'm on the spectrum according to my better half, you know the type, spanners in order, a place for everything and all that jazz. The noise will drive me mad so i would like to sort it, any tips.
  4. OK, so I took the bike out for a short run tonight and initially no rattling. As bike warmed up it reappeared. Lean it over to the left or right and its stops. Turned bike off for 10 mins and it had gone. Rode it home and it came back. Did the old long screwdriver as a stethoscope routine and I think I've traced the noise to the casing above the cam chain, assume it's called the cam chain cover, educated quess. Could it just be the cam chain. I have read that if you slaken the adjuster and then retighten this can cure it. Before I try that I thought I'd run it past you guys in case you know any reason why I shouldn't mess with the adjuster. You know what they say everyday is a school day
  5. Yep, i'd go with the dull knock but more regular.
  6. That's one way of looking at it. You could say it was running a total loss system
  7. Worth knowing, a few jobs this weekend then, I remember now what its like to own a classic. At least theres not oil raining out of it and all the bits are still attached after a ride, that was the joy of running a 60's triumph
  8. The filters were checked when it had its MOT a couple of weeks back and as i mentioned in my other post, its having the carbs balanced on Friday. Thanks again
  9. Folks, That's great thanks, ill try all the easy stuff first, its going in for a carb balance on Friday so i'll keep you informed. Always ride with the lights on, but can i ask why?
  10. I've spent the evening researching and the noise looks like cam buckets or shims, would worn shims make this kind of noise? It only appeared after a good run. Shims are cheaper than buckets so fingers crossed. What do you think?
  11. Indeed, was going to cafe racer this one but as its all there I will restore it either this coming winter or the winter after, I've got an old mini I'm restoring with my son as his first car. Until then just enjoy I reckon, I've been amazed at the interest it gets. Anyway enjoy the summer and keep safe bud.
  12. Mine's an ex-dutch bike and I felt was good for the money, I paid 2500 and I was surprised how well it handles for an old bike. Did 100 miles on it today and it didn't miss a beat. a bit thirsty though I thought, managed 100 miles on 18 quids worth. Took the plugs out at the weekend and they were all sooted up, only put them in about 50 miles or so before, not sure if the carbs need balancing or the valve stem seals are stuffed.
  13. Hi All, Sorry more questions. I've been out on my 79 GS 750 today and wound it up a little to see how it went. Got home and noted when sat on the bike there is a metallic noise, sounds like top end, but when I put it on the side stand it disappears. Sounds like a cam type noise, but this is just an educated guess. The noise isn't constant, as in its rattling its nuts off, it sounds like every couple of seconds at most. Any ideas.
  14. Nice, its a lot tidier than mine, hence the 'away in the distance' photos. Is that a standard colour? The spoked wheels look nice, gives it a slightly more classic look.

    Steering Lock

Hi All Good stuff, I've had a good luck and found where it bolts into position from underneath, there's definitely not one built into the ignition. Thanks for your help as always
  16. Morning All, I've just noticed that I haven't got a steering lock fitted to my 750 GS, or I'm getting blinder as I get older. Can someone post a pic on where it is located please.
  17. Nice one, thanks for the heads up. I haven't had any scares yet, probably due to as you say, ride within the limits of the bike. To be fair I'm enjoying the plodding about. I'll have a look at the master cylinder. Don't want to mod it too much, I like the standard feel.
  18. Thanks bud, the photos are flattering, it needs tidying, I'll do some close ups at the weekend to show the bits that need sorting.
  19. Hi All, well the weather picked up for a day and I took the GS out for its first ride, see pic below. Anyway, all went smoothly, clutch is a bit heavy so I need to look at that and I would like to upgrade the front brake, I was wondering if new pads would do the trick. I think the carbs need a bit of a balance, but it's rideable. It was great to just cruise around and the smile didn't stop. Away working this week but hoping to get out again soon. Staffordshire Classic Bike Show in just over a week so thats the next big run, anybody going? It amazed me how much attention the bike got whilst I was out.

Hi All, thought I'd already posted this, anyway, the bike sailed through its MOT, ran bait rough but changed the oil and filter drained the carbs, new plugs and away it went, sweat as a nut. The oil smelled a bit fuely so assumed it had dumped. Order a tap kit just to be sure. It aint stopped rain since so itching to take it for a bit of a run. As soon as its out and about I'll post some pics. I'm not keen on the orange colour did they do them in a deeper red?

Hi All Thanks for all the advice, sorry its been a while, i've been flat out working overseas. The stand is finally sorted, i found the correct fixing bracket on Eblag, worked a dream. The bike is finally ready for its MOT and i've just insured it for the grand total of £78 fully comp, so result. Hopefully on the road for April and time to enjoy. Taking it to the classic show at Stafford in April. Bring on some dry roads and some sun.
