rdubandit Posted October 18, 2019 Posted October 18, 2019 I'd like to Cerakote a set of Bandit 1200 carburetors which requires complete disassembly. Has anyone removed entirely the butterfly linkage? The brass JIS screws holding the butterfly to the rail are staked. Can I just carefully grind down the staked portion of the screw? Quote
Swiss Toni Posted October 18, 2019 Posted October 18, 2019 (edited) Nothing stopping you. But, they'll be tight! Good fitting screwdriver a must. New ones for re-assembly! Oh, and mark plates back/front, top/bottom and carb number! And put some support at the staked side so you don't distort the carrier plate when unscrewing! Edited October 18, 2019 by Swiss Toni Quote
rdubandit Posted October 19, 2019 Author Posted October 19, 2019 I feel pretty stupid. Cerakote makes room-temperature curing ceramic coatings, so I don't need to remove the butterflies and linkage. Quote
Jaydee Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 @rdubanditany details on where you got the cerakote from? Was looking at Cerakote, Durakote and gunkote products a while back. Wonder how durible it would be on ally, like frames and swingarms(?) Anyway here is a pic of set of bandit carbs that got the Gunkote treatment that I found on the web. Looks good. Quote
rdubandit Posted October 21, 2019 Author Posted October 21, 2019 (edited) They looks fantastic! I'll post up my results with Cerakote. I bought the C-series coating. @JaydeeI purchased directly from Cerakote: https://www.cerakote.com/?msclkid=a0c5d7ef79471b791dde8a427dc27834&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=01 Brand&utm_term=cerakote&utm_content=General Edited October 21, 2019 by rdubandit additional info Quote

Anyway here is a pic of set of bandit carbs that got the Gunkote treatment that I found on the web. Looks good. Presumably it will all be in the surface preparation, like everything else. I for one cannot see how without specialist equipment such as an aquablaster, a used set of carbs can be adequately prepared because there are just so many nooks and crannies in the surfaces. Just getting them really clean is often a Herculean task. The carbs in the picture have had a major strip because all the steel bits, including even the return springs, have been re-zinced but even then it's a pain in the arse to get all the alloy surfaces clean. What with all the cleaning and the cost of the coating kit and new seals and other o'rings, the costs would be well on the way to buying a new set of RSs. Anyway, each the their own I suppose Edited October 21, 2019 by Dezza Quote

rdubandit Posted October 21, 2019 Author Posted October 21, 2019 Thanks @Jaydee @Dezza - my CV carbs are now prepped for vapor blasting. A new set of RSs are on my Crimbo list. 1 Quote
