  1. Not much happening still Parts I'm waiting on should be here this next week, and hoping to get it off the table not long after. Threw the bodywork on as I have not seen it together for a while....no where close to road ready yet...
  2. If you dimple on the inside of the wheel, you'll never see it once the bearing is in, should not be a problem with the Powdercoat. Only should take maybe 6-8 hits evenly around bearing mating surface...if the bearing just barely slides in now, it won't take much to get it tight.
  3. I had that issue with a front wheel before. Bearing just fell in......so I took a center punch and dimpled the inside of the face where the bearing fit into. Has been working fine for years now.
  4. I liked the nostalgic looks of the Suzuki rotors, and the fact the rear matches...plus I wanted the bike to be as much Suzuki as possible. They work great as they are, but I know there are a 100 ways to have better front brakes than these yet....I do wish I could make the adapter bracket look less obvious though...I did consider drilling it with some holes.
  5. Still waiting on parts, that I had no idea I needed until I started cleaning up all the smaller parts of the bike and engine. Basically on hold till I get them, it's been pretty quiet in the garage this week.... PS, I do have tires for it now, just waiting for a chance to get to a tire machine to mount.
  6. Beautiful looking bike....!!!
  7. Pulling engine apart and cleaning up cylinders and valves...
  8. Loaded up and ready for the first outdoor bike show of the season ....
  9. Taking the GS to a bike show this Sunday along with my GT750J. It will be the 1000's first public viewing, so I need to get some of the bugs off and polish up the pipes a bit. The GT needs a major clean up as it has not been used in almost three years now.
  10. A little more done....all controls cleaned up and on bike. Soda blasted the tail and some other parts, and bolted the tail on. Brakes are done, and I thought before I tear engine apart, I might set it up in the frame just to see how it all fits for the first time.
  11. My GS1000SZ rattles quite a bit at idle, until I pull in the clutch...then put it gear and go...no more noise. Been that way for many years with no problems
  12. Test it with carbs off... or at least with throttle slides fully open squirt a bit of oil in each cylinder too
  13. As I promised myself....I was able to get the project up on both wheels by Sunday.... Although the holiday did eat up some garage time. Hand controls, brakes (if I get my bolts) and tail framework are next weeks project deadlines...
  14. Took a nice ride about the country side Saturday, added another 75 miles to the shake down process. So far no problems of any kind, other than carbs feel a bit off at low RPMs...I know, don't go slow and I'll be fine... also got my first GS1000 in a magazine this month...about 35 years after the picture was first taken. Classic Motorcycle Mechanics...4-17
  15. Playing around with the forks at the moment...waiting for a couple of copper washers I forgot to order. Repainted fork lowers with epoxy, should last my lifetime anyway.
  16. It was a perfect day to go riding, but I made a commitment to try and get this bike done by end of May. The wife went out of town to see her grandkids for the day, so that left me with free time....to ride, or work.... I decided to work on the VJ23. It was time to start bolting the thing back together, after getting all the new bearings put in everywhere. I wanted to get the rear end done today, and then I will tear the forks apart next week, and rebuild those by next weekend....And hopefully have it rolling again, by next Sunday....(my goal for the week) And then I took the wifes bike out for a spin, just because it was too nice out not to.....And she wasn't around to see * pic of a KTM deleted *
  17. Wheels done with new genuine Suzuki bearings/seals, instead of cheap Chinese copies. More parts cleaned up and ready for another 20 years of use. Picked up a low mileage correct shock, that was in much better condition than the original on bike. And new bearings/spacer in the shock linkage as well.
  18. Bandit 400's have curved spokes instead of straight...All of them stateside only have rotor mounts on one side. A late GSXR400 or RF600 are 3.5 with the right axle/bearing size, which work perfect on a VJ22, but still have curved spokes. A late model Bandit 1200 wheel has the same straight spokes and is a 3.5, but uses a different rotor mount spacing....wheel bearing swap is possible with rotor spacers.... I have one I'm working on fitting possibly. If I use GSXR400 GK76 rotors with the Bandit 1200 wheel with different bearings and spacers it will work, but is a bit heavier than the flyweight VJ23 combo.
  19. Yea....I really wish they were 3.5, then the options would be infinite...No idea why Suzuki, by the mid 90's, would put a 3.0 on a bike designed for the track. And there is no other Suzuki wheel made that will directly swap out that is a 3.5....
  20. 120 won't work on my 3.0 rim... thats the problem, I have to use a 110x70x17
  21. Even without tires I bet it could ride like its on rails.....
  22. Frame and swing arm are cleaned up now and ready to get back to work holding everything together. Wheels were pretty rough with missing paint and corrosion, so they got a coating of paint remover, and then the soda blaster cleaned up what was left. Taking the wheels to work tomorrow to get them looking like they did when new. Then new bearings and seals....not sure what I'm going to do about tires yet....????
  23. Calipers are from a 600 Bandit, and the rotors are from a GS1150, or a EFE on your side of the world. The calipers seem to be better than the original single piston, but I also have braided lines, radial master and sintered HH pads now too. I would have prefered 4 piston calipers, but no room with wire wheels unless I spaced them out to the fork tubes....
