  1. Thanks...I've never stripped a carb bank down before but I guess checking all seals , making sure the jets are all clean and the floats are working properly will be a start, i'm sure i'll be back on here looking for further pointers in due course.
  2. Thanks for the advice, will have another look at things next weekend i will remove carbs again and clean jets ,also check whether little o ring is there and do a double take on everything, fingers crossed, i'm a carb novice!.
  3. Carbs are BST36SS, i removed the carbs and fitted a new throttle cable ,also changed the far left carb top for a good spare one i had lying about cos it had a small crack on one of the corners ,turned the carbs upside down in order to fit new cable and all the petrol left in the bowls spilled out and that's it...did have a struggle fitting the far left airbox rubber onto the carb body ,and i did check that the fitment onto the manifold rubbers was a good one and made sure all the screws were tight.
  4. Got the bike to run this morning in a fashion, revs are all over the place revving its tits off and up and down on its own without me touching the throttle...somethings wrong somewhere, must have fucked up re -fitting the carbs ?... starting to wish i'd left the thing alone in the first place...any advice please?
  5. Thanks , just a bit strange that bike was running ok before stripping carbs, i didn't touch the fuel tap at all, i guess empty carbs and a dodgy prime setting has brought it to light. i'll have another look at it tomorrow time permitting.
  6. Removed the carbs on my 88j yesterday with the intention of changing the o rings in the carbs and fitting a new throttle cable, anyway to cut a long story short the screws holding the carb rubbers are all solid and I couldn't be arsed to try and get them out for the moment, so I fitted the new cable and put the carbs back on, connected fuel pipes and vacuum pipe set fuel cock to prime and pressed the starter ,it cranks over like a good'n but just wont start ,it doesn't even cough, pulled the plugs to make sure theres a spark and there is a strong one on all plugs, but they are all bone dry, looks like no juice is getting to them, took the tank off and theres fuel in the pipes, took pipes off tank and turned cock to prime and theres just a trickle out of one of the stubs and nothing out of the other, i expected fuel to be pissing out of both...the bike was running fine apart from slightly hanging revs before I stripped it down, acratching my head,am I missing something?...any advice welcome.
  7. Thanks for that...didn't really plan on taking the head off LOL....will persevere when the oil has had time to penetrate.
  8. Thought I would spend a bit of quality time yesterday and change the o rings in the carb rubbers on my 88j ,the revs hang on a bit and changing the o rings wont do any harm and might even improve things ….got the carb bank off ,then tried undoing the poxy cross head screws on the rubbers ,I couldn't get any of them to budge, they are all seized solid, you cant even get a decent length screw driver in there to get a good purchace on them, I've got a stubby but i don't want to mangle the screw heads, apart from soaking them in WD40 is there an easier way of getting them off, when I eventually do i'm gonna swap them all for cap heads.
  9. Hi All, probably done to death but i'm due for new oil and filter on my 88J slingshot, any recommendations as to which oil/viscosity to use or will anything ( within reason ) do,i changed it a couple of years ago when I first bought it but for the life of me I cant recall what I used....ta in advance.
  10. Bardney racing near Lincoln...
  11. Take em off and fit an Oberon bar end mirror .
  12. If they are standard fit rubber well nuts and if you're not too fussy about originality there's loads on Eblag ...cheap as chips.
  13. My stock coils are working ok, just wondered what difference the Dyno's might make, seems like not a lot, if it aint broke I wont fix it!...
  14. Years ago I had a Jota with a JMC swinger fitted, i always used a paddock stand with grippy rubber pads instead of bobbin hooks ,never had any probs.
  15. Hi Mate...where did you get your alloy tank fuel filler housing from...looks good!
  16. Thought not...thanks for that.
  17. Got the chance of a pair of Dyna coils for my 88J slingy, what sort of difference should they make to starting/running etc...and is it worth the change? Thanks.
  18. Thanks lads, job done, what sort of difference if any will a new filter make?, the one I took out looks like it had been in there since the bike was new!....also fitted a new set of plugs...just about to go out for a test ride.
  19. Hi all, been trying to fit a new stock air filter to my 88J ,is there an easy way to get the thing out without removing the carb bank?...I;ve tried squeezing it out through the rear with the battery removed but theres no way its coming out that way ,don't really want to disturb the carbs...any tips welcome chaps.
  20. Ok thanks ...i'll get on it.
  21. Thanks for all the replies... Specifically which o rings are we talking about ?...and whereabouts are they, i'm a complete carb novice.
  22. Hi All, my 88J slingy always starts ok from hot or cold and goes like stink but I've found once its fully warmed the idle is quite high and when revved it doesn't settle into a steady low idle instead it seems to slowly return to a steady tickover, the throttle response seems to be on a delayed action !..i've checked the throttle free play and made sure its not snagging anywhere, next job is to see if any of the carbs slides are a bit lazy....any pointers please?
  23. I had the same sort of probs...turned out to be an unconnected vacuum pipe, check all fuel pipes and vac pipe under fuel tank are fitted and routed properly.
  24. Thanks for that mate...I thought they were what you say but I was thrown a bit by the cable operated choke, mine is a push/pull knob.
